Academic Journals
Academic journals represent an essential source of knowledge and insight. However, with the expansion of academic knowledge, determining the credibility and trustworthiness of a specific journal becomes quite difficult. In order to provide educators, students, and scholars with access to trustworthy academic literature, a thorough analysis of the characteristics that allow one to differentiate between credible academic literature and journals that are not quite trustworthy is needed. For this purpose, the English Studies, a peer-reviewed journal, has been selected. By considering the core properties of a trustworthy academic source, one will be able to introduce effective measurements for the evaluation of scholarly literature, in general.
Journal Description
When evaluating the quality of a peer-reviewed journal and the articles that it offers, several criteria should be considered. Specifically, its stated focus and the topics of the articles published should be aligned, which is the case of the English Studies. Similarly, it is crucial for a trustworthy source to have its articles be peer-reviewed, which the English Studies ensures carefully. Namely, the journal subjects its essays to a double-blind peer review, which allows maintaining high degree of credibility and academic integrity. Furthermore, the English Studies includes only the articles of the finest quality (“Journal Information”). Finally, the fact that the articles issued in the English Studies have been published in the Scopus database indicate that they have enough credibility to be considered a trustworthy academic resource.
Journal Analysis
Furthermore, the journal in question has a series of characteristics that allow defining it as highly valuable for the further use as an academic resource. Specifically, the parameters such as its rhetorical, conceptual, and theoretical ones should be mentioned. The rhetorical aspects of the English Studies can be defined as the expression of thought characterized by high quality and sophistication. In turn, the conceptual perspective of the subject matter can be described as the connection between the topic of the study and the general area into which the journal delves. The English Studies contain solely the articles that pertain to the specified area and represent exceptional quality of thought, which makes it align with the set standards. In turn, the theoretical perspective can be described as versatile, which also meets the established expectations.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Admittedly, the publication in question has its strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, there are articles that represent the pinnacle of scholarly writing, such as the paper by Fakhrkonandeh (“Crossing the Mirror into Maternal Waters: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Becoming-other in Ella Hickson’s The Writer (2018)”) represent an obviously successful writing. In turn, Mathews’ “The Moral Economy of Sadie Jones’s The Snakes” represents the least popular article, which can be attributed to several weaknesses in its design. However, the journal still serves as an example of high-quality academic database, being particularly useful for scholars due to its diversity and peer review.
