The movie is an adaptation of Steven King’s novel made by Frank Darabont. “The Green Mile” is a very emotional picture, and it provokes controversial feelings. Moreover, the film raises questions about death and immortality, justice and belief in it, meanness and unfairness of reality, evil and kindness. “The Green Mile” is about the miracle. The movie tells the story of a man who was alone but did not lose hope that he can make friends, and maybe due to his belief, he could ultimately gain them. “The Green Mile” is a pure drama that forces the audience to change their outlook. It is a masterpiece without any exaggeration.
The picture is enriched with visual metaphors. For example, the interior of the suicide compartment is perfectly made. At the sight of it, vague, undefined negative feeling occurs. The image of green floors provokes rejection, half black death row is associated with fear, and the sunlight falling on the table in the hallway – post monitoring of suicide – inevitably leads to sad thoughts. Waiting for own death – what can be worse?
“The Green Mile” is a strong movie in which immortality is depicted as the biggest illusion of the world. Many people want to achieve it, especially villains with an eternal thirst for power over the world. But in “The Green Mile,” in the example of a good character, King makes it clear that immortality maybe even worse than death because the moments when you lose those whom you care about cannot be erased from memory. Memory is the main stumbling point on the way to immortality and death. It does not let regrets disappear. Memory is the border between life and death, and this border does not give death to overpower the world and immortality to seize the minds of people. We live until we remember.
