Introduction

How frequently do you pass around the city and see someone sitting with a plastic cup or a little cardboard box, asking for food and money? Have you ever seen measurements of folks who do not have a house or a job to support them? You may believe it is their fault; you may believe they will have it if they require anything. “Go find something to do,” the vagabond always says.

In any event, this counsel is meaningless, considering that there are specific reasons why individuals lose their homes and jobs and cannot return to their usual life. Anna Quindlen’s essay “Homeless” illustrates her belief that home is vital to a person’s existence. People need to have their territory where they are masters and can do whatever they want. Every person should have a corner where they can customize everything for themselves and feel comfortable and convenient.

Every Person Needs a Home

A home is where all soul scars may be healed, where a person is accepted just as he is. People do not want to leave home, at least not for a long time, because it is alive and a source of strength for people. According to Quindlen, “It is not size or location that matters, but pride of ownership”(Quindlen, 1987, p. 243).

Many people use their homes as a place to sleep, but it is also where life’s most meaningful events occur. People form connections in the house, raise children, and offer them something meaningful with which to navigate life. The house reveals a lot about people: their wants, aspirations, relationships, where their energy is directed, and what is going on inside them. Homeless individuals are robbed of all of this; they have nowhere to turn when they are in distress, and they do not feel safe.

Homeless persons frequently form pseudo-houses where they spend the majority of their time. These shelters, however, are likely to be only temporary until people or weather circumstances force the homeless individual to leave. This exacerbates the homeless person’s mental state. He believes that he is unnecessary in the world and that everything around him is unjust.

As Quinlen pointed out in her essay: “Some people want what shelters don’t have and won’t compromise, not for a cot, not for oatmeal porridge, not for a shower with a special soap that scourges bedbugs” (Quindlen, 1987, p. 243) This shows that people do not need external factors but peace of mind. Temporary shelters may save someone from external threats but destroy someone from within.

There are several steps humanity can take to reduce the homelessness problem by at least a little bit. First, every member of society should get rid of the outdated belief that a homeless person is to blame for their situation. Thus, society will treat such people more loyal and with understanding. Secondly, free or cheap hostels can be organized where every homeless person can find shelter. No one will kick him out of here; a person will be able to feel safe. Also, support groups can be organized, where work to improve psychological conditions will be carried out.

Conclusion

Thus, people should pay attention to the problem of homeless people. The problem of such people consists not only of unsanitary conditions or hunger but also of psychological components. Homeless people do not have a place where they can come at any moment. They feel cut off from the world, which affects their moral state. Society should be more loyal to people experiencing homelessness and provide them with help and accommodation. States need to introduce policies to help people experiencing homelessness, which will help to draw attention to this problem.
