The rule of law is one of the most crucial aspects applicable in supporting global businesses since it covers a broad spectrum, such as tackling injustices like corruption. In many parts of the world, the lack of an effective rule of law inhibits the ability of people from low socio-economic classes to excel in setting up businesses.
Due to the lack of an effective rule of law, corruption prevails in many parts of the world. Corruption is a major factor that negatively impacts small businesses in various parts of the world (UNODC, 2012). As a result, people from poor backgrounds cannot conveniently start businesses and compete with those from high social-economic classes. In order to help people in various parts of the world overcome the issue of corruption and hence enhance global business, it is essential to promote the rule of law.
There is a difference between the rule of men and the rule of law. The rule of men is for the benefit of a few individuals who use force and power. In contrast, the rule of law is stable, reasonable laws that apply to everyone regardless of class (Poverty Cure Lesson, n.d., 08:45-09:30). In many developing countries, the rule that exists is the rule of men, where few individuals use force and the power from the government to protect themselves when conducting corruption activities.
In Christian teaching, there is support for equal law where everyone is treated equally under the rule of law. According to Apostle Paul, “Let everyone be subjected to the governing authority, for there is no authority except that which God has established” (NIV, 2011, Rom 13:1). For the well-being of businesses, it is essential to adopt and promote the rule of law that applies to everyone equally regardless of their socio-economic status. This is relevant in ensuring that few people do not use government power to protect their corruption activities. Consequently, small businesses across the globe will be able to flourish and be protected.
