Personal Opinion
For my part, I concur with George’s assessment that the shipping sector has to demonstrate a greater awareness of its activities’ effects on employees and the natural world. We have a responsibility as consumers to be aware of the supply chains that bring items into our homes and to demand more sustainable and ethical business practices from the firms we patronize. In addition, I believe that the topics George brings up are pertinent to other aspects of the curriculum that we discussed in class, such as international economic systems and environmental rights and responsibilities.
The discussion brought to mind my previous experiences working in the food sector, where I had the opportunity to observe firsthand the intricate web of connections and the covert expenses involved in getting items to market. In general, George’s lecture serves as a vital reminder that there is much more to our day-to-day lives than what is visible on the surface. This is a key takeaway from George’s discussion.
