Patient safety is aimed at minimizing the risk of adverse effects of treatment and diagnosis (Graves et al., 2021). The Institute for Health Improvement’s (IHI) report suggests numerous ways to ensure patient safety across various treatment areas. To improve patient care, the Institute presents active engagement of healthcare professionals in the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) recertification, where each professional must achieve a minimum score to be cleared for work. According to IHI, the best strategy to guarantee physical and mental safety for patients is to properly organize the work of medical stuff through different normative regulations.
Among the most effective steps to prevent harm the Institute offers the following ones: defining and classifying the problems caused to patients; collecting data on whether patients are adequately treated in a particular hospital (IHI Multimedia Team, 2018).. From the point of view of a leader of a medical organization, IHI recommends creating a road map for assessing satisfaction with care in hospitals and stimulating staff performance with their leadership skills. There also such steps as actively engaging patients in collaborative preoperative instructions; adjusting staff or equipment; implementing the recording, and analysis of individual cases of harm (IHI Multimedia Team, 2018).
As a DNP leader, I would offer the following ways to ensure safety among staff. It is essential to install an emergency alarm system in the workplace, and implement a system of rules and memos for nursing staff behavior in difficult or conflict situations. Ensuring comfortable conditions in the rooms where patients are waiting for care is vital. These measures will ensure the physical safety of health workers as well as their relaxed emotional state and will positively effect on the quality of communication with patients.
