Introduction
The Jesus Movement of the 1960s and 1970s in the USA was a religious movement that sought to renew and reform the church by refocusing on evangelism and discipleship, especially among the so-called ‘counterculture’ of young people. It was a response to the disaffection of many young people towards mainstream churches and the culture of the time.
Leadership, Outreach, and Worship in the Jesus Movement
The Movement was primarily led by young Christians, often called “Jesus Freaks.” They were passionate about social justice, and many were involved in outreach to people experiencing homelessness and the disenfranchised (DeFazio 51). They were also passionate about worship, and the music of the Jesus Movement was a mix of folk, rock, and gospel.
The Movement was driven primarily by a desire to spread the gospel to the ‘lost,’ a term used to refer to those who had not heard or accepted the message of Jesus. This was done through evangelism and discipleship, emphasizing the importance of community and spiritual transformation (Johnston 82). The Movement was also heavily influenced by the Pentecostal Movement, which emphasized the power of the Holy Spirit and the importance of being filled with the Spirit to live a godly life.
Core Beliefs and Spiritual Practices
In terms of belief, the Jesus Movement emphasized the importance of the Bible and the need to live according to its teachings. It emphasized the need for personal transformation and a commitment to following Jesus (Johnston 119). There was also a focus on the importance of Christian fellowship, with the encouragement of small groups and house churches for mutual accountability and spiritual growth. Finally, it proclaimed a message of love, acceptance, and freedom from the pressures of materialism and traditional social norms.
Conclusion
The Jesus Movement was an essential step in transforming American culture and politics. It helped to solidify the concept of democracy in the US and reshaped the country’s social and political system. The ideas put forward by the Jesus Movement still have relevance today and continue to influence the development of the US.
