The question of what defines human fate and whether one’s life is predestined to have been the source of inspiration for robust discussions and philosophical analyses. In his piece, “The Laws of Nature,” C. S. Lewis questions the legitimacy of the idea that one’s fate is guided by a mere chance. Though C. S. Lewis directs the reader to the idea that the concept of destiny exists, the balanced perspective of the author allows for multiple discussions.
One of the concepts with which I resonated most when watching the video was continuity as the foundation for the laws of nature. Specifically, C. S. Lewis mentions that, when occurring in nature, events are never the singular occurrences that people typically perceive them to be. Instead, they represent a cadence of situations that form a coherent streak and lead to a specific outcome (“C. S. Lewis – The Laws of Nature”). The specified description fascinates me with its novelty and coherency. At the same time, some concepts turned out to be quite complicated. Particularly, I had the greatest trouble with the idea that the stream of events may not have had a beginning. Nevertheless, despite the challenges in understanding some of the concepts, the video has offered a major takeaway, namely, the significance of connecting space and time into a single entity.
Even though C. S. Lewis’s position on the subject matter is evident, he offers an opportunity for a robust discussion. The contemplations concerning the nature of one’s life trajectory are profound and insightful. Therefore, “The Laws of Nature” offers a remarkably thorough and honest, even though slightly skewed, analysis of the notion of fate. As a result, even though Lewis does admit that the presence of predestined events may be a possibility, the introduction of a scientific basis for the argumentation makes the essay quite convincing.
