John von Neumann was a famous mathematician who left a significant impact on the development of modern science and world history in a relatively short time of his professional career. Born in a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, in 1903, von Neumann was destined to witness and participate in the most important period in the development of modern science, the emergence of quantum physics (Macrae, 2019). Students become familiar with von Neumann’s historical figure while exploring the development of computers, game theory, nuclear deterrence, and applied mathematics, emphasizing the abundance of scientific areas where von Neumann left his mark.

From an early age, von Neumann was recognized as a prodigy for his photographic memory and ability to perform complex mental calculations. While von Neumann’s initial European career mainly focused on writing scientific articles, his career’s central moment was his participation in the Manhattan Project after emigrating to the US. Among his American colleagues, von Neumann was known as Johnny, which testifies to how friendly and charming the man was (Macrae, 2019). Von Neumann’s contribution to the project focused on mathematical calculations to establish control over explosive energy to produce desired reactions.

While von Neumann’s indirect participation in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki makes the discussion of his historical figure controversial, von Neumann’s goal was to quickly achieve the end of the war by any means. After the war, von Neumann was one of the key figures in the nuclear arms race between the US and the Soviet Union. Von Neumann’s idea of closing the gap in nuclear weapons served as the basis for nuclear deterrence policy. Von Neumann’s further activities post-war include the development of the game theory, working on the first computer architectures, and global warming predictions.

In conclusion, this essay summarizes the main life accomplishments of John von Neumann. The essay defined John von Neumann as one of the few figures who greatly influenced the development of many scientific fields and international politics in the 20th century. However, despite von Neumann’s outstanding contribution, his historical figure is less known in contemporary culture compared to some of his contemporaries, such as Albert Einstein and Alan Turing.
