Collaborative Problem Solving
The two strategies a family can apply to assist their child in literacy growth are matching the word and a picture and the read-and-write approach. In matching the word and an image, the family member will have to make CVC and CV word cards plus corresponding pictures. Select a single word card while pointing to each sound. The person teaching the child must be involved in saying the sounds while pointing at each sound on the word card to avoid confusion. After a while, the child can blend the sounds while telling the instructor the word. Finally, the family member has to instruct the child to select a corresponding picture that goes with the word. The above strategy will only bear fruits when conducted in a friendly environment free from disturbances. On the other hand, the read-and-write strategy involves the family member making worksheets of CV and CVC words intended to be practised. Have the child read the intended words while underlining every sound as she pronounces it. Then have the child say every sound while writing it down. Lastly, have the child write while telling the whole word. Repeat the above strategies each day until the child masters well the CV and CVS sounds.
Resources
The two resources the family can access for more strategies to support the child include CVC Work Book for Kindergarten and Online Tutor by Teacher Aya. The workbook contains various ways to help children construct, read, and write less complex CVC words (Fudge, 2020, pp. 1–37). On the other hand, the YouTube video contains various practices that can be applied in teaching a student CVC words (Aya, 2022).
