Introduction
Nursing requires competency and understanding of critical roles that must be adhered to for a healthcare worker to deliver top-notch medical services to patients. Throughout this course, there have been analysis of the evidence-based practices (EBPs) in nursing that imposes and develops expertise and knowledge power for nursing students. Part of the course benefits a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) learner in that it impacts their leadership and management skills in the community where they will be working (Hebb, 2018). The history of the nursing profession relates to the traditional health care pursued by different individuals in Britain, the US, and major parts of Asia before full industrialization. Generally, NUR 3805 has been an informative course for me. Through our able professor, I have obtained a significant amount of knowledge regarding the scope of nursing, as discussed below.
Course Reflection
The course offered a raft of competencies for BSN-prepared nurses. I will discuss at least three goals regarding the extent to which I feel prepared to offer my clinical knowledge to different patients from all walks of life. The course was detailed, and I had to do thorough research to be on the same level as the requirements. The following reflects my three goals as learned and understood from Nursing Role and Scope course.
Demonstration of Skills Using Patient Care Technologies
Through this course, I understood that many nursing technologies foster communication between clinicians and deliver quality care to patients. I feel full-baked in nursing with the integration of technology in assisting where there is a need for efficiency, reduced costs, and high-quality medication. Electronic health records (EHRs) provide access to healthcare data regarding reimbursement, prescription, and monitoring of patients (Herrman, 2019). For example, NUR 3805 has enabled me to research further on equipment such as portable monitors that allow nurses to check patients while helping other individuals in a hospitalized setting. I understand that with the use of portable devices, I can undertake respiratory and oxygen saturation to patients, thus, making me confident in my career.
By using EHRs, I effectively document patients’ care, enabling doctors to retrieve information when necessary and on time. One of the skills that I have concerning the same is handling information of patients and making it anonymous and safe from unwanted recipients. By following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) laws, I cannot be challenged by contradicting situations that may lead to personal or group liability (Hebb, 2018). I believe that I can provide real-time health updates by using modern technology to record health information. Additionally, I am conversant with telehealth machines that offer virtual care, such as Doctor on Demand and LiveHealth (Tung, 2020). Thus, my skills in patient care using modern technology are boosted beyond doubt.
Effective Communication with All Members of the Healthcare Team
This course has significantly benefited me since I have widely learned the essence of communication within medical departments. Without communication, there cannot be a linear flow of operations, which eases the delivery of care, improving the quality of care. Communication should be professional and corporate since that helps efficiently offer medical services. I can communicate from the patient, colleague, and interpersonal perspectives, which makes me ready for the nursing roles that will grow my career further. Active listening, making physical connections, and finding common ground are strengths I have obtained from the NUR 3805 course. For example, applying the background, affect, trouble handling, and empathy (BATHE) method builds strong ties between patients and nurses, and that is why I frequently use it whenever there is a need (Masters, 2020). I can confidently offer clinical intervention through the communication metrics learned in this unit, making patients safe and educated regarding their medical issues.
Implementation of Evidence-Based Nursing Appropriately in Acute and Chronic Care
The application of EBPs in nursing is common in medical care since it assists in finding a solution to an existing chronic condition. I have learned to present relevant medical dispensation to patients with acute diseases, which has reduced costs due to the lowering of hospitalization for these fellows (Tung, 2020). I can handle chronic diseases in patients from a remote zone regularly. For example, I have learned how to draw evidence in understanding the proper provision of oxygen to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (Masters, 2020). In this case, I can apply randomized controlled trials, personal experience, expert opinions from studies and evidence from the cohort, and explorational case-control studies. Therefore, the course has been enriching to me in terms of implementing EBPs in acute and chronic disease care.
Conclusion
I have learned several skills through NUR 3805, which the University has offered. One of the knowledge areas that I have acquired include the efficacy in communication, evidence-based practice, and application of electronic health records in the delivery of medical services. For example, I am competent in handling COPD using telehealth applications such as HealthLive. Therefore, I am grateful to the faculty for offering the course as a necessity for BSN students.
