I am a person who likes spending a considerable amount of time walking around my neighborhood’s streets, as this process helps me in inner peace finding. It is not surprising that after many such evenings, I discovered an issue, which significantly violates the comfort of walking and distracts from the process. Moreover, it might become a potential danger for citizens, both pedestrians, and drivers. The problem is car parking is considered to be the major issue in urban areas. It is related to the rapid incense of car ownership (Hossam El-Din, 2017). I have noticed that the streets are crowded with vehicles of different types, which significantly interfere with walking and increase the chances of a car accident. Recently, I witnessed a car crash that became the reason for me to write this paper to address the issue. Two pedestrians, a mother, and her child were involved in the case. Despite them sticking to the traffic code, a car’s driver who was attempting to get out from the side of the road did not see them because of other vehicles that caused the accident. The shortage of parking spaces in my neighborhood is related to several main causes. The streets are narrow, and they cannot safely fulfill the demand for parking. Parking areas are scarce in places with high concentrations of activities and facilities. Finally, there is a high rate of commercial and business cars in use that contribute to the problem.
It is possible to examine several solutions that might assist in solving the issue. Innovative designs of parking spaces, such as automated structures, where drivers can leave their car, can manage the issue by providing bigger capacity in smaller zones. Establishing new parking regulations also can assist in lowering the demand for spaces. A useful intervention might be charging people directly to drive and varying the price with demand (Hossam El-Din, 2017). Considering that it is not possible to redesign the narrow streets, adding remote parking spaces where it is inexpensive and making them unpriced can reduce the number of cars in the most crowded areas of the neighborhood. It also compliments the mentioned above regulations. In addition, it might be helpful to provide drivers with information on the availability of parking lots and prices using signs, maps and brochures, and websites.
