The fatal shooting of the 13-year-old Adam Toledo by a police officer is a practical example of practices associated with minors and law enforcement interaction. A juvenile justice system is a distinctive form of system that promotes youths’ productivity under group homes, foster care, or someone taking guardianship. However, the imminence of juveniles committing a crime is barely unpredictable, of which the first responders, the police, act to their best capacity to make arrests (Alfonseca, 2021). In this case, the outcome of the police engaging juveniles may be fatal, thus questioning the circumstances to which led to the fatality.
Incidents involving the juvenile shooting by police come into play due to prior perceptions and biases in the law enforcement domain. From Toledo’s case, notable groups of immigrants are perceived to be dangerous and violent. Therefore, a juvenile Hispanic person is not an exception to this perception creating biases while exercising justice (Alfonseca, 2021). This streams to the public perceiving police as racists are creating a possibility of social injustice. The police shooting was brutal that led to the demise of a juvenile, translating that the police used excessive force while subjecting their subject of arrest to arrest.
Safeguard and prevent similar incidents of juvenile social injustice calls for crime prevention strategies among the juveniles. Community policing is an integrative strategy that would allow law enforcement to have good relationships with the public. In return, law enforcement can effectively manage crime. With community interaction by the police can reach an understanding regarding their cultural difference and habitual patterns (Alfonseca, 2021). This strategy also involves information sharing that would be beneficial to juveniles who, at their teenage season they need moral guidance and support in commandeering their life. Moreover, the likelihood of minors participating in gang-related crime would be minimal.
