It is a significant step for any entrepreneurs to design their own business model. The process itself provides the individual with the necessary knowledge and skills in business and economics. However, analyzing and reflecting on one’s own work is also an important practice. The author of this paper aims to explore the patterns, strategy, and design of a personal business model canvas using such theoretical frameworks as The Four-Frame Model by Bolman and Deal and Images of Organization by Gareth Morgan.
Patterns and Strategy of Business Model Canvas
From an overview of all the proposed business model canvas patterns, it can be said that the organization aims to work closely with US government agencies. Moreover, the entrepreneur seeks to gain a stable and high profit. However, US foreign policy tends to change every four or eight years, depending on the presidential election results, which may cause economic damage to the organization. Put differently, such uncertainty and unpredictability may lead to below-target business-level results (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.). It means that the organization will have to pay more attention to non-military, namely the US civilian population, and foreign markets as potential military goods consumers. The organization should consider the collaboration with organizations such as NRA and Gun Owners of America and include them on the list of key partners. An entrepreneur may use Geographically Dispersed Team Management to gain revenue from other countries outside the US (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.). The entrepreneur might also rethink organization design.
Business Model Canvas Organization Design
In order to rethink and change the organization design, it is necessary to identify the existing one in the proposed business model canvas. The author of this work believes that the proposed business model canvas is a hierarchical structure. There is a horizontal separation between two types of functions, departments, and divisions, namely military and civil (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.). The formality is also high as the organization collaborates with government agencies and the military sector. Employee participation is low, and communication is downward as most significant decisions are assumed to be made by the organization’s management. It is worth noting that the Functional Framework is a more precise definition for the organization shown in the proposed business model canvas. It can be assumed that Organization Development will be the most appropriate methodology for implementing changes if needed (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.). It is because military products and services are high-value products. Potential changes should be aimed at developing the flexibility of the organization in terms of sales markets.
Frame and Metaphor of Business Model Canvas
The Four-Frame Model by Bolman and Deal provides business people with a different perspective on understanding organization models. The author of this paper considers the proposed business model canvas to be a Structured Frame. The business model clearly shows the organization’s purpose, which is the provision of military goods and services. This thesis is mentioned in three sections. The nature of the organization’s partners calls for the separation of roles in employees and the need to maintain formal relationships. The military market also requires personnel and management to adhere to specific rules, policies, and procedures. Structural Frame and the Functional Framework are not the only ways to describe the proposed business model canvas. Images of Organization by Gareth Morgan is another theoretical framework that allows entrepreneurs to reimagine their business model. It can be said that the metaphor for the organization is the Machine. An organization has a straightforward task and is most effective in a stable environment. However, to be more effective and efficient, the organization must become more organic.
Conclusion
This work is an overview and reflection on the personal business model canvas. It is important to note that the author used theoretical models such as The Four-Frame Model by Bolman and Deal and Images of Organization by Gareth Morgan. It was found that the proposed business model should address a broader range of consumers and make some organizational changes to be more flexible to the environment.
