The N.F.L.’s management is biased and can be based on their hiring process. The administration uses the “Rooney Rule,” which considers white applicants with weaker resumes over qualified black applicants. The rule is, therefore, an establishment to encounter discrimination allegations on how N.F.L. is run and not a measure to fight racism. Thus, the management of the N.F.L. should be abolished since it is pro-white and promotes racial discrimination.
The NFL has a few white players and a majority of players of color, yet it enjoys a majority of white management. The management problem is based on racism which makes it difficult to give the coaches, players, and fans the spirit of sportsmanship. An example is the case of Flores, who, according to C.B.S., fails to get hired since the Giant executives have already settled on Brian Daboll, a white to coach (Leonhardt). There is also strong evidence of racism cited when white coordinators succeed black coordinators with weak resumes while the board hires fewer black coaches.
Critics, on the other hand, still believe in the “Rooney Rule” as an approach to help solve the racial injustices in the management of the N.F.L. According to them, the hiring rule has been expanded to accommodate an interview of at least two minority candidates and also conduct outside interviews (Leonhardt). The critics, therefore, argue that the move would ensure diversity in hiring and increase the number of minorities in positions such as general manager, executive, and head coach.
Through the proposal, I will research the “Rooney Rule” to answer racial discrimination in N.F.L. management. To prove my argument, I will require access to data of N.F.L. coaches, coordinators, executives, and managers in the past 20 years to prove my claim. In this case, the topic is significant to help address sportsmanship without involving politics. Therefore, management should be hired based on the passion for the game, not politics; hence, the “Rooney Rule” should be abolished.
