Introduction
There have been several things put forward by different people trying to explain this phenomenon. Some of them are facts while others are fallacies brought about by people in order to justify their plans after the year 2012. Scientists have come up with discoveries and ideas to prove the truth behind this phenomenon. Christians also have come up with their own explanation as to why nobody knows the time when the world will end.
An argument of the world coming to an end in 2012 has come from the claims of certain planet called Nibiru, initially called planet X. Sumerians discovered this planet, and there is a believe that the planet is headed towards the planet Earth. This planet is said to orbit the sun every 3600 years. This was brought about by a person by the name, Zecharia Sitchin, who discovered and translated Sumerian documents that have clearly identified this planet. From the documents, Sitchin suggested the return of planet X is within this century.
This leads to the notion that the world might come to an end in 2012. Another self-declared psychic indicated that the people living in a fictional planet, which is near the star Zeta Reticuli, had issued her with a warning that the Earth faced imminent danger from Planet X or Nibiru. This proves to be falsehood because these individuals are just doomsayers who pop up every other year. This is because the same was predicted to happen in May 2003, but nothing happened.
When this failed to happen, the catastrophe was transferred to December 2012 of which still nothing might happen. Now, when the Sumerians came up with this, it became an argument between various scientists and the Christians to prove what was true about the whole matter. Most of the scientists who have undertaken various studies prove that the world will not end in 2012 (Waylon, para 2).
Ancient predictions about the world ending in December 2012
Most of the predictions, in respect to the end of the world, are based on Mayan calendar. The year of 2012 refers to the last year Long Count Mayan calendar and the 21 December 2012 is regarded to as the end date of a 5125 year long cycle.
There are various interpretations that have emerged to expound on this transition. One of the interpretations assumes that this is the onset of a time on earth where the earth and its inhabitants may be forced to go through a change. This change may be either physical or spiritual, and this may mark the beginning of a new era.
According to the Mayas, the complete cycle will come to completion on the 21st of December 2012 during the winter solstice. This has made many people believe that the world will change and never to be the same again. Although some people have been absorbed entirely into the phenomenon that the world will end, they believe that, even if the world will not experience an ending, at least there will be some changes. It is believed that these will bring a new era in to the world.
The basis of all these predictions is the Maya calendar which should end in December 2012 or bring about some changes (Restall and Amara, p. 114). All these predictions about 2012 have caused excitement and a lot fear among the inhabitants of the planet earth.
Although, the Mayan calendar asserts that the Earth will end in December 2012, one of the Mayan experts denied the fact. This is according to the newspaper dated January 2, 2012. He says that he has a strong believe that this is just but a calendar change like any other and that it is a misreading (Leonzo, para 3).
Scientific facts that support that the world will not end in 2012
According to scientists the phenomena and myths about the ending of the world in 2012 is total rubbish. There are several scientific facts that have been laid down to explain that the world cannot end in 2012. The theories that have been discovered prove that the conspiracy of the world enduing in 2012 is not true.
The Nibiru theory says that the planet X, which is also the Nibiru, will have a significant collision with the planet earth hence causing a massive disaster to the world. Such a myth has been proved false. The truth about this is that, this planet is unknown and it does not exist. The astronomers have proven this because during their on study of celestial objects and the physical universe nothing was seen as Nibiru planet (Charles, para. 1-5).
Although the Sumerians claim the planet to be invisible, scientists argue that such claims cannot be possible since the astronomers would have discovered. Therefore, this fact nullifies the Nibiru theory. Another scientific fact that supports the phenomenon that the end of the world is not in 2012 is about the rotation of the earth. Essentially, there is the belief that a certain alignment of planets in a milky way will reverse the earth’s rotation or gravitational field leading to unusual occurrences in the world.
This has been proved false because the rotation of the Earth cannot be reversed. Scientists say that this has never happened since the beginning of the words, and it cannot happen unless proved otherwise to begin in 2012. Concerning the earth’s gravitational field, the magnetic polarity of the earth normally takes place at after 400, 000 years. Scientists say that it will not take place for another few years which is believed to bring no harm to the world.
Again, about the Mayan calendar, it is believed that the world will end at a time when the Mayan calendar will end. This is because the Mayans believe that December 21 2012 as the day of creation. It is said that it will be complete the great cycle in December 2012 hence the world will end at that same time (Orlando, para. 2). Various types of calendars have been in use all over the world.
These calendars have been used for many years. However, scientists further explain that calendars cannot be used to predict the future of the planet earth. They also argue that, every other time, the calendars run from January to December and the world still continues. In addition, many believe in the coinciding of the notion of the world ending with the forecast as put forth by Nostradamus, a 16th century philosopher.
This resulted into many people believing that there will be a change in 2012. The scientists are against this, and they still inform people that there is no evidence of such predictions before. They further say that the studies from the Nostradamus can be interpreted to mean something different. This proves that there is no evidence of the world ending in 2012 (Martin, p. 13).
Another false prediction is the 2012 film that warned people that the world can end in a short time. Scientists have discovered that the film makes use of fears and rumors and incorporates elements that depict viral marketing. They further say that this film does not bring out any truth. Instead, it directs the viewers to a faux scientific website hence the films have just been used to make money.
It can be concluded that, people who still believe the Mayan calendar, are depressed about their situations. Therefore, they wish the world to come to an end. People have been warned not to listen to such individuals who argue that the world will end. This is because such individuals want people to waste their property and engage in unplanned spending (Hundley, p.74).
Christian’s facts that support the statement
Apart from scientists there are Christians who have tried to explain why the world will not end in 2012. Most Christians believed that the world would come to an end a millennium after the birth of Christ (The Sun, para. 14).
A Christian warrior by the name Tremain says that nobody knows when the world will be ending except God Himself. He bases his arguments on the Christian Bible, which observes that there is no individual who is aware of the time when Jesus will return to Earth. The return of Jesus will signify the world coming to an end.
He partly agrees with the argument that the world will not end in 2012 but disagrees with the notion of the world coming to an end. Based on this, he says, it is only the Christian bible which can give the truth regarding end of the world. He opines that once the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided to send their first rocket into space, they were not able to trace a path. This was until a Christian informed them of the two times that God was able to stop the sun from moving (NASA, para. 10).
This is the point from where the NASA group was able to get an idea to get the two lengths of time and was able to trace a path. Therefore, he concludes this by saying that it is only the Christian perspective which has a proof concerning the end of the world. According to Hitchcock, in his book, “the Bible and the End of the World” mentions several things that support the idea that the world will not end in 2012 (p. 5).
He begins by saying that the message from the Bible regarding the end times is not a mystery. He opined that people are supposed to read and obey the scriptures in the Bible. This is because God made the world himself and knows when to end it. He further says that the world will not end in 2012 because Jesus will not return in December, 2012 the so called dooms day (Hitchcock, pp. 6-7).
This is based on the facts indicated in the bible that no one knows the day nor the hour of the end time except God himself. He also bases this argument on the fact that the rapture has not yet occurred, and the final years of age has not yet began. Therefore, he disapproves the fact that the world will end in December 2012.
He further explains that we are in the last days hence the last hour. He again disapproves the aspect of the world ending by saying that there are no prophecies that should come to fulfillment before the rapture. Thus, he proves the Sumerians catastrophe to be false. He also depicts that, may be some events could take place around December 2012. However, this does not indicate the world coming to an end or any leap to human consciousness (Hitchcock, p.171).
Conclusion
From the discussion and analysis of the idea of the world will not end in 2012, it can be concluded that scientists have to some extent supported their approval on the same.
The studies carried out by scientists clearly indicate that the world will not end in 2012. Their perspective on the same is clearly explained by facts from scientists to support the statement. On the same note, Christians have also tried to give their view on the end of the world. As discussed above, their perspective is a real prove that the world will not end in December 2012.
The facts explained under the Christian perspective prove that the world will not end in December 2012. On the other hand, the disapproval of the aspect of the world coming to an ending in 2012 does not give clear and enough support for the same. The Mayans calendar has been disapproved by a Mayan expert hence there is no evidence left to support that the world will end in 2012. Therefore, it can be observed that the argument of the world ending in 2012 is not true.
