According to Al Jazeera, Turkey has officially requested to change its addressing name at the end of May (2022). The country formed a request to change the spelling from worldly recognized ‘Turkey’ to ‘Türkiye’ without any specific explanations. Thus, the reason behind it is not completely clear, but the process of changing has already started and is about to be finalized by December.
The spokesman of the UN revealed that the request had been received in a letter from a minister of foreign affairs of Turkey. Generally, the official starting point of the change is considered when the United Nations received the letter. Hence, from that specific moment, the organizations have started to prepare a solid ground for the country’s new international appearance.
Following the president’s words, a new variation of the country’s name better represents its culture, values, and traditions (Al Jazeera, 2022). Primarily, the change has affected the United Nations at the initial stages. Yet, the representatives of Turkey have strongly advised using the new variation of the name for commercial and diplomatic purposes immediately. Additionally, the new name is expected to be used in any language, which would make it an internationally recognized official term.
The United Nations has already complied with the request and promptly changed the country’s name to ‘Türkiye’ in the organizations. However, according to the specifications within the minister’s request of the country’s foreign relations, the name is expected to be used in any affairs. Even though it will take some time for the general public to get familiar with the changes, the new version of the country’s name has officially become relevant with the cooperation of the United Nations.
