Over the years, United States has generously contributed towards Foreign Aid to poor nations. In 1970, the world’s economically endowed nations decided to help the poor nations by contributing 0.7 percent of the gross income. This aimed to improve the security, and development of those nations. United States is ranked the 17th in terms of percentage of donations, although it actually contributes the most in terms of dollar counts. Research shows that most of the donations do not meet the economic interests it is donated to cover. Many are the times the money is embezzled by some selfish leaders or at times, used to cover the costs of the overpriced products by the rich nations. Other times it is dispatched to governments that do not practice democracy or even to those who are not in dire need for assistance. It is for these reasons that the government of United States has considered offering foreign assistance on the areas of their National Interest, which will be discussed in this essay.
United States considers foreign assistance a key policy in their budgeting. They participate in humanitarian aid for the poor countries and support the important projects, which are beneficial to the people, military and security support for people in an attempt to give freedom to the common people, and finally they contribute to the multilateral contributions. The national interest for the United States is to have peace all over the world, freedom for all and finally to create opportunities for all nations to develop. Those factors do not only apply to external world, but to the internal state of the country.
The National Interests by the US government are part of the many factors that facilitate development for any nation. Any developed state will have will give all its members same opportunities. At the same time development, means that the members of the nation are assured of peace by protecting them from internal and external enemies. Finally, they participate in health promotion so that people are able to enjoy the developments that will be achieved. Following the terrorists attacks, which have risen in the last few years, it is clear that security is at stake. Globalization has also contributed to this kind of insecurity because of development of technology, which consequently leads to development of powerful weapons by other countries. This poses a risk to the US government because it is has formed more relations with the other nations. The government should therefore focus on security for the country as well as the other nations. The government of United States has invested a lot on foreign assistance on security for the poor nations. They are constantly involved in helping resolve conflicts especially in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa among others. They send military assistance in the parts of the world where they feel their assistances is required or that are unjustly treated by other nation or opponent nation.
In conclusion, US government has been fully involved on the foreign assistance for the poor nations with the hope that they will develop and be able to provide the members with the factors that improve the quality of life.
