Identifying Learning Style and Its Key Characteristics

Learning is a multifaceted process that allows an individual to develop various skills. Most students are unsuccessful at perceiving information, passing tests, and obtaining skills due to the negligence of their mental patterns affecting these processes. Having experienced different ways of acquiring knowledge, I have realized that I am better at perceiving and operating information learned from visuals.

The individual with a visual learning style best perceives information through images. They draw specific pictures in their heads of what one is trying to convey. Regularly memorizing information occurs when there is a picture, video, or diagram.

Visual people quickly understand when they communicate the concepts inherent in visual thinking. These are words like – see, look, take a look, let’s look, consider, pay attention, and the like. Schemes, graphs, drawings, and images are close and perfect for explaining any phenomenon. Such people tend to be overly expressive and use gestures to describe anything.

Appearance is necessary for the visual—they are receptive to everything they see. Such people value colors, shapes, and sizes because this is how they memorize information about objects. Normally, parents may indicate that their child is visual by observing if they perceive the world schematically. The major benefit of this learning style is that these individuals are endowed with the ability to speed read and grasp texts better.

Reflecting on Prior Awareness and Assessment Surprises

I noticed I belonged to the visual learning style long ago; therefore, the test results were unsurprising. I could always recognize a celebrity’s name from a photo, but I could not imagine anyone’s appearance when I read the name. Moreover, theoretical lectures were torture since I could not concentrate on the speech and had to revise my notes to grasp the information. However, I could easily perceive the material back at school since most of the information was presented in visual forms.

Situational Shifts in Learning Style Preferences

If I studied something like chemistry, I would implement a kinesthetic learning style as it lets one immerse oneself in the process. Kinesthetic learners tend to obtain knowledge by integrating their senses. In science, it would be interesting to experiment with the chemicals, observe the reactions, sense the smell, and interact with the equipment. Putting on different learning styles is vital, allowing one to expand one’s cognition and add new mental patterns.

Adapting Study Techniques to Match Learning Style

Having figured out my learning approach, I would concentrate on facilitating knowledge acquisition by structuring data in several ways. Mind maps are the salvation when it comes to memorizing interlinked concepts. Moreover, I would apply a note-taking strategy highlighting the essential information to be learned and associating it with a specific color.

In addition, I would utilize an outlining technique to memorize each point better. These techniques help the visual learner process information better by structuring it in concrete blocks. If presented like this, I could understand and learn more material because I base my memorization on visualization. By knowing how data blocks are located, I can quickly restore the content in my mind. Overall, visual type is prevalent among the others, and it is a gift that many educational organizations pay attention to different learning styles.
