Defining Vocation: A Purpose Beyond Employment
Vocation is an occupation to which a person is specially drawn or for which they are suited, trained, or qualified. It is also a particular profession, trade, or occupation for which a person is particularly suited or qualified. Viewing one’s career as a vocation rather than merely a job emphasizes the importance of the work and one’s commitment to it (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). It can impact one’s work by encouraging them to take a more holistic approach to their tasks and responsibilities, perceiving them as a chance to contribute and serve their organization, profession, and society.
Shifting from Job to Vocation: Transforming Work and Workplace Relationships
In an ER nurse environment, viewing work as a vocation means that nurses will be more mindful of their duties and responsibilities, viewing them as opportunities to serve their patients and community. They will strive to provide the best care possible, recognizing that their work is more than just a job (Grand Canyon University, n.d.). The nurse will also strive to build relationships with their colleagues, treating them as people, not just coworkers. This can also be applied to one’s studies and future career path, as it encourages them to approach their education and career aspirations with dedication and a clear sense of purpose.
Applying Vocation to Nursing Studies and Career Path
By applying the concept of work as a vocation in an ER nurse environment and beyond, one can positively affect their work environments, their chosen fields, and those around them. They will be more mindful of their duties and responsibilities and strive to provide their patients and colleagues with the best care and service possible. They will also be more likely to build relationships with their coworkers, treating them as people, not just colleagues. Lastly, they will have a beneficial influence on their chosen areas and others around them by pursuing their education and career aspirations with dedication and a sense of purpose.
