Introduction
The modern society could be considered an extremely complex entity that incorporates numerous social institutions, values, beliefs, requirements, etc. For this reason, to be successful and remain that part of any community, an individual has to be able to meet a great number of requirements and follow a specific code that encompasses all above-mentioned aspects. This means the high level of stress that appears because of the fear of discrepancy or inability to accomplish the most important tasks and remain successful. A number of stressors also appears because of this fear. That is why the mental health of a person or his/her wellbeing might suffer. Under these conditions, the need for counseling becomes obvious as it is a powerful tool that could be used to help a person to cope with stressors.
Wellness & Prevention
For instance, wellness counseling is one of the most important spheres today. Counselors provide individuals with the tools and motivation needed to achieve their emotional, physical, mental, and other goals (“What does a health and wellness counselor do?” n.d.). Their work encompasses numerous spheres of human activity and should also be considered while assisting an individual in his/her recovery.
It is also crucial to predict the appearance of certain crisis and use prevention methods to assure that the emotional state of a person will remain stable and help him/her to achieve the desired goal. In other words, wellness counseling should come along with prevention to guarantee that a person will realize his/her current goals, tools he/she possess to achieve it and to prevent the deterioration of his/her state or crisis.
Application of Counseling Theories
At the same time, the work with a client presupposes the ability to meet his/her diverse needs and be ready to determine the theory of counseling that should be used to guarantee the improvement of the state. The given choice is extremely difficult and important as it preconditions the outcomes of the process. In this regard, a counselor should choose the theory resting on the personal peculiarities of an individual.
The age, gender, social status, background, and desired goals should become the main factors to consider when applying a theory or deciding on which method to use (“How to decide what kind of therapy to provide,” n.d.). It means that a counselor is always a good analyst who incorporates the basic data about an individuals peculiarities and makes a certain conclusion considering the diversity of these aspects.
Family Systems Theories
Another crucial element that should be considered while working with a person is his/her family as it preconditions his/her mode of life, peculiarities of a psyche, available resources, personal and professional goals, emotional state, etc. For this reason, a counselor should be able to initiate family related interventions to improve the current state of a person. There are three family systems that determine the above-mentioned interventions. The structural one evaluates that structure of the family, behaviors, and patterns that are explored by its members, and other important factors to determine the stress factors (“Family systems therapy,” n.d.).
The strategic one is focused on the investigation of family relations and functions outside the therapy session. In other words, it looks on the way they interact in their real-life environment (“Family systems therapy,” n.d.). Finally, the intergenerational approach considers generational influences on a family and individual behaviors peculiar to this entity. It helps to trace the current problems back to the previous generations and realize the real causes for their appearance (“Family systems therapy,” n.d.).
Altogether, the work of a counselor becomes extremely important in the modern environment as it helps to preserve well-being and accomplish different goals.
