Context
Following the end of World War II, the United States entered an era that lasted several decades and was later known as the Cold War. This term was assigned to this period for a reason: there was no actual military clash between the U.S. and the USSR as two expanding superpowers, but instead, the confrontation took place at the level of technological, ideological, cultural, political, and scientific conflicts.
One consequence of this attempt to prove to the world the superiority of the U.S. way of life was a meaningful expansion of Americans’ economic and civil liberties. It is reported that in the first two decades following the end of World War II, the U.S. embarked on a path of suburbanization, accompanied by massive peaceful protests, the expansion of civil liberties, and the development of urban and civic culture.
Content
One manifestation of this Cold War was the intensification of the struggle for the freedoms of black citizens in the United States. Between 1950 and 1960, a large number of peaceful protests for black rights were held. The primary source, “Willie Brown and Doug Stewart Walking with Signs in Civil Rights Protest March,” depicts two black men walking down the street, carrying placards with barely legible inscriptions (Library of Congress, n.d.).
However, the general tenor of such a performance, namely the fight for civil rights, suggests that Brown and Stewart’s slogans are aimed at expanding the rights of black people and drawing attention to the problems that African American citizens face in the United States. The author of the photograph sought to capture the spirit of the times: one of protest, civic-mindedness, and a fight for freedom.
Meaning
The photograph analyzed is only one of a vast number of primary sources that depict the struggle of Americans for civil liberties and fundamental human rights. It is impossible to consider these episodes in isolation from the Cold War, as it was the confrontation between the U.S. and the USSR on many levels, including social ones, that led to an understanding of the way of life of every American fighting for individualism, belief in equal opportunity, and respect for private property as the antithesis of communist collectivity. The civil protests of the time were a manifestation of American freedom and faith in their nation, reflecting the spirit of the times. By studying this and similar primary sources, historians can trace the slogans and symbols that were actively used, as well as the needs of disadvantaged citizens during the period.
