Introduction
Psychologists use writing of all kinds throughout their careers. Students enrolled in psychology studies must produce articles, developing their writing abilities through essays, research papers, literature reviews, and annotated bibliographies. This type of assignment enables students to adopt the author’s perspective and make a judgment call based on other literary works. A crucial ability that will be utilized to promote both the professional’s career and the discipline of psychology is academic writing. As a result, by summarizing the interviews of two experts, this essay demonstrates the student’s ability to clearly and effectively express concepts.
Analysis of Interviews
CEO
A Chief Executive Officer (CEO) participated in the first interview. Mrs. V holds a Master of Business Administration degree. She communicates with other team members, sets short- and long-term goals for the workforce, manages and leads the organization’s personnel, and updates policies and procedures, all through daily written communication. Mrs. V clarified that effective written communication is crucial in the corporate world. The company’s vision, strategy, and key announcements to stakeholders must be communicated when interacting with other business experts.
The changing habits, according to Mrs. V, are some of the current difficulties she has in writing communication. Learning the appropriate language for business was one of the obstacles to textual communication in the past. Workflow interruptions and poor decision-making might result from a CEO’s miscommunication (Mendiola-Fernández, 2023). Employees may struggle to understand priorities or make informed decisions, which can lead to delays, errors, or the ineffective use of resources.
When the company switched from a non-integrated platform, where employees used paper diagrams and other written materials to initiate the transfer, it presented another issue for Mrs. V. She utilizes a variety of professional papers, including publications that outline staff changes, new strategies, and frameworks. Using a computer-based approach for professional writing has both good and bad effects.
Mrs. V said that, because she was accustomed to the outdated paper charting approach, mastering the new system was difficult and frustrating. Nonetheless, the new system is advantageous since staff members can access all the data directly on their computers, rather than having to search for numerous paper forms. This simplified the process of starting the shift and made her job simpler. She added that she had always been a proficient writer in college, consistently scoring excellently in her research projects.
School Social Worker
Mrs. S, a female social worker at a high school, was the subject of the second interview, and she holds a Master’s of Social Work. Similarly, she has seven years of experience as a counselor. She frequently communicates through written means, such as in school records, assessments, college application-related chores, case notes, and reports for special education learners, all of which require documentation in all relevant areas. Generally, a considerable percentage of a school social worker’s duties involve writing (Knox et al., 2020). The documentation procedure is crucial because whenever a student experiences an emergency, the counselor’s paperwork may be required in court or during legal processes.
Mrs. S’s current communication issues include deciding which details to include or exclude in case notes. The transition to technology-based systems for certain writing communication, however, has been one of the obstacles in the past. She had grown accustomed to utilizing written communication on paper for certain documentation over the years. Still, modifications to the counselor’s protocols led to the conversion of several systems to computer-based programs. For Mrs. S, notes taken pursuant to a subpoena to have a child removed from a dangerous household are among the benefits of written communication.
Mrs. S also discussed the value of written communication in her line of work. It is one of her top concerns since an emergency may happen at any time, and school principals could utilize her notes to make a crucial decision that would affect a child’s life. She assists learners with their treatment plans and progress reports by corresponding with colleges every day via email. Throughout the process, she also assesses and documents students’ behaviors.
Conclusion
I developed an understanding of the value of written communication in any industry where lives are at risk. The interviews with Mrs. S and Mrs. V had one thing in common. Both professionals struggled with the change from textual communication to computer-based applications. One of the two was a talented writer, whilst the other needed to develop their writing skills. This is crucial, since written communication can have a significant impact, particularly if others examine the notes.
The statement made by Mrs. S that her notes were utilized in court to have a learner removed from a dangerous home situation startled me the most. It surprised me since, although I was aware that written correspondence might be inspected pursuant to a subpoena, I had never given any attention to how the notes would affect a person’s life.
Mrs. S’s comments about previous school districts, where principals or other individuals would request private information about pupils, were disheartening. The knowledge I have received will enable me to continue striving to be a superb academic writer and to publish some of my work in the future. Although I still have a long way to go, I will be able to write professionally with practice.
The interviews have demonstrated the importance of writing as a talent across all subject areas. Each respondent was asked about their level of written communication, the types of written communication they use, present obstacles, previous challenges, and the nature of academic and professional writing, as well as their positive and negative experiences with written communication. Any career will heavily rely on writing, but psychology is particularly dependent on it. To improve their writing abilities, psychology students should welcome input from both teachers and fellow students.
