Introduction
Being a CEO or the owner of the XYZ Internet Access Company, there are different things to put into practice to run this company without any problem. First thing is to provide uninterrupted service to the customers. To make this possible, CEO should have set of good managers in each section to handle it properly. Just having the managers won’t make the company successful; CEO must motivate the new managers to use their skill effectively. This can be done by giving various instructions which are quickly understandable to the new managers to improve their performance. Always set a goal for managers and CEO should always maintain good communication with the managers (Guideline for the new manager, 2006). This paper mainly discuses on a model named POLC model which focuses on planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Section 1
The XYZ Internet Access Company is operating in a competitive environment where many internet service providers are operating. So, to operate in a competitive environment, the CEO and managers of the company should work hard. Motivation and innovation from the CEO is most important for the survival of the company in this competitive environment.
The Company is providing “high speed internet, digital phone, dialup internet, long distance, business services such as web hosting and domain registration, fax to email” (Product + services, 2009). and other services widely. Being a new company, it will add some more features soon. The high speed internet service provided by this company is very fast and reliable that helps the customer to search the web within seconds. The CEO and the managers should ensure that the speed of the high speed internet never decreases. The dial up connection provided by this company is limited to some area and its speed depends upon the network congestion. In case of digital phone, the company is charging no installation fee for limited period and also company is providing different plans for the customer, such as home plans and business plans. Home plans are mainly meant for home users and business plans are meant for business people and different organizations. The charges or tariff vary according to the plans. The long distance service offers the customers to call anywhere in the world from home. Also, there are many plans and users are free to choose the existing plans. The rates differ in each plan. The Company allows Fax to email account services for the users. With this, users can send fax to the email. For this also, different plans are offered to the users. Web hosting service of the company offers the user to host and manage their website. The company will ensure maximum flexibility for the user’s website. The domain registration services provided by the company allow the user to register their website with specific domain such as com,. net,. org etc.
Being a new company in the area of internet access, the management team of the company has to work hard to stay in this competitive field. The CEO should focus on each of the manager and their skills. CEO needs to interact with the managers in the different sections and should enquire about the developments. Holding discussions with each staff of the company will give the idea about the taste of the customer, for example, what kind of service/plans more customers are choosing. Once it is known, it is very easy for the CEO to bring the required changes to meet the customers’ requirements.
Section 2
Planning is one of the most important things for the success of a business. It is the CEO of the company who has to plan everything. Proper planning is the key to success. “The management team should be able to show that all possible challenges have been planned for, and solutions mapped out in advance!” (Your business plan- the most important document your company can write and why you need an expert consultant, 2005, Writing a business plan, para.2).
A proper planning should be flexible according to the prevailing situation. The CEO must fix a goal for each manager to achieve. A clear communication must be established with the employees of the company. Details regarding the day to day activities must be collected or must be known to CEO. The job responsibility of each employee must be well known. CEO should always try to motivate the employees to achieve the goal of the company. Customer satisfaction is another key area which should be given due importance.
Without proper planning, nothing will go in the desired and correct direction. So, planning is most important for the success of the organization. Planning something and putting it aside will not give any benefit. Proper implementation of the plans is essential, and for that a proper communication must be established by the CEO and the managers.
Section 3
It means to arrange systematically for harmonious or united action. It also means to arrange something in a desired pattern or structure. It is the process of operations according to some ideas and principles. A newly appointed manager must take some time to analyze the situation and work according to it. Each person has different working and learning styles. The role consists of guidance, observation, and assessment.
For the success of any business organization, there must be proper leadership. It is all about getting things done at the right time, in the right way and by the right person. The way you plan and organize the activities may lead to proper effectiveness. The plan for achieving the objectives is the basic form of properly organizing the concern. Success of a business lies in the hands of the leader who takes proper decisions.
A person appointed as the CEO sits at the top management position. CEO must understand the customers, employees, market situations, and the competitors in the field. Basically he is the leader of the concern and he must make others to follow him. He should –
- Create a vision of organization’s future.
- Create a strategy of the business.
- Identify goals and achieve them.
- Increase productivity.
- Eliminate weakness and improve strengths.
- Create performance appraisals.
- Minimize cost and maximize output.
- Maintain more customer relations.
- Diversify the businesses.

Section 4
Leaders are those persons who head a group. It is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving the common goal. Leader is the inspiration and director of any action. They are the guidelines for a group or team. Leaders should have good knowledge of the business and the capability of doing business. A leader should have a plan and he should communicate the plan to his followers. He must have a vision of future.
Leadership and management are the key success factors for business intelligence programs and projects. The processes and proper integration with the people and technology deliver improved business value. CEO requires process knowledge, project management and organizational team building.
The roles of a leader in a business:
- Futurist: CEO must understand the future of the industry and find out the prospects of the business. As technology is improving day by day, he must find out the market for his business in future.
- Analyst: He must forecast the business in future, the profitability, marketability and accountability of the business. Analyzing the business in present and forecast the future.
- Contrarian: He must take correct decisions when there are controversy between two or more alternatives. He must be able to solve controversies in the business.
- Ambassador: He must act as a representative for the concern. New findings, innovations are to be sent out only with his representations. He should show his representation in the industry. He must make diplomatic position in the industry (Leadership and management, 2008).
Section 5
A standard against which things are compared. It is the reverse of planning; to see that business is working according to the fixed plans. Planning is the basis for controlling a business.
There are internal and external controls; internal control include managing the quality of services provided to the customers, monitoring employee absence rates, and controlling the performances according to the plan. External control involves government’s regulations, competitions etc.
This is a monitoring process; here employees and activities are assessed. CEO determines whether the organization is moving towards its goals, and rectifies, if needed.
Controlling is the activity of overall control of the business. Here employees, customer satisfaction, activities performed, and total business improvements are assessed and see that changes are required.

The article discuses about a new internet access company and various guidelines the CEO and the employees must follow to make this company a success. The article mainly focuses on POLC model and several points related to this company have been discussed.
