Introduction

Nowadays, the internet has transformed communication in a way that blurs the lines between the written and spoken word, making writing as innovative and spontaneous as speech. This is an issue because it challenges traditional notions of language etiquette, particularly in written forms of communication. Some people say that maintaining strict etiquette rules for online writing is essential to preserving language standards and professional decorum, as it ensures clarity and respect in communication.

Others say the internet should be a space for linguistic creativity and flexibility because it reflects the evolving nature of human interaction. In my opinion, while embracing the innovative aspects of written online communication, there should still be a basic framework of etiquette to guide our digital interactions.

Importance of Online Communication Ethiquette

One reason I think a basic framework of etiquette is necessary for online writing is that it ensures professionalism and respect in formal contexts. For example, when sending a work-related email, using a clear subject line, proper salutations, and a structured body can convey professionalism and consideration for the recipient’s time. This means that adhering to certain standards helps maintain the formality needed in professional settings and shows the importance of context in communication. Therefore, I think that while informal communication may offer greater flexibility, professional exchanges should adhere to established etiquette.

Another reason I think that etiquette should guide online writing is to avoid misunderstandings and maintain positive relationships. As Cameron says (2017), the bountiful treasures within spoken language, such as the melodic cadence, vocal resonance, and, in personal encounters, physical gestures, cannot be replicated in written communication.

For example, in text or instant messaging, tone can be easily misinterpreted without appropriate emoticons or punctuation. This means that following certain conventions can enhance the clarity of our messages and show the need for cues that replace non-verbal communication present in face-to-face interactions. Therefore, I think that a basic understanding of communicative intent through text-based etiquette is crucial.

Some people say that enforcing any form of etiquette on the internet stifles creativity and the organic evolution of language. They say the internet should be a free-for-all playground for linguistic experimentation, so they think stringent rules are outdated and unnecessary. Writers were no longer constrained by the shackles of seeking authorization to publish their work. They now had the liberty to embark on a blogging journey or indulge in the realm of fan fiction, without having to navigate through the traditional guardians of the written word: editors and publishers.

This newfound freedom also enabled them to break free from the rigid linguistic conventions rigorously upheld in print culture. It allowed them to venture into the realm of linguistic experimentation, where they could toy with grammar, spelling, and punctuation and engage in playful linguistic exploration (Cameron, 2017). Their idea is right in some ways; however, I disagree with them because there needs to be a balance between creativity and comprehensibility. As Deborah Cameron (2017) points out, people have always found ways to adapt language to new media and purposes, but without some form of mutual intelligibility, communication breaks down. Innovation should not come at the expense of understanding.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe etiquette in online writing should not be rigid but serve as a guide to facilitate clear, respectful communication. I think that recognizing the context, maintaining professionalism when necessary, respecting the recipient’s time and space, and ensuring clarity and positive relationships are essential components of digital communication etiquette. It is important because the way we communicate can significantly impact our relationships and opportunities in a digitally connected world.
