Introduction
News and media play a significant role in shaping public opinion. They highlight recent events, drawing attention to various issues in the community and major changes that may affect people’s lives. Moreover, news resources are a means of creating a common background for people. Therefore, when publishing articles, the media must take into account many factors, including the interests of the community, their views, and the importance of social issues. This paper provides a summary of six recent articles published by Buffalo News relating to different areas of people’s everyday activities.
Recent Articles
O’Shei’s Article
Sports are an important part of the community, so this article by O’Shei (2023) highlights recent management changes for the Buffalo Bills and Sabers. According to the article, “John Roth, the chief operating officer of both teams, and Kathryn D’Angelo, the senior vice president of business administration of the Bills,” were fired on Wednesday (O’Shei, 2023, para. 3). Moreover, their dismissal became quite resonant since it was caused by unethical corporate behavior of employees. Moreover, the actions and management skills of the owner of both teams, Terry Pegula, are questionable. He previously proclaimed himself president of the Buffalo Bills and Sabers and sought to monopolize the industry (O’Shei, 2023). All this can affect the way teams work and, probably, their results.
Galarneau’s Article
Another area of interest for community members is entertainment. In his article, Galarneau (2023) writes about the opening of a new coffee shop at the Buffalo Medical Campus. The owners of the establishment, Georgian couple Lasha Takalandze and Megi Endeladze, wanted to create “a place with “good vibes” where you come for the caffeine, but hang out for the chill” (Galarneau, 2023, para. 3). Since the Buffalo Medical Campus is a fairly crowded place, the addition of a new facility could be an exciting development for residents. Moreover, the couple received funding to start their business from Buffalo State University (Galarneau, 2023). Therefore, the article demonstrates the opportunities that exist for young entrepreneurs in the community.
Carrol’s Article
In addition, the Buffalo News has a separate column in which letters from citizens are published. This allows the public to express their opinions regarding various social issues. One of the recently published letters is the statement of Carrol (2023) that the demands of Sweet Home teachers for salary increases are unfounded. The author of the letter focuses on the fact that representatives of other professions also require additional education and are forced to work overtime. However, the issue of wages for other workers is not raised (Carrol, 2023). Therefore, according to Carrol, teachers should first of all take into account the general trends in the community before asking for a salary increase.
Helpful Articles for the Future
Tsujimoto’s Article
The article by Ben Tsujimoto describes a recent attack on a student with autism. This incident caused much concern in the community, as it demonstrated the inability of the authorities to guarantee the safety of people with special needs. Moreover, the bus driver and her son, who witnessed the attack, believe that the incident was the parents’ fault since they are responsible for ensuring the safety of their child (Tsujimoto, 2023). This demonstrates the level of public ignorance about the problems of people with special needs.
Moreover, this problem applies to both children who bullied Conner, “throwing wadded up paper and pencils” (Tsujimoto, 2023, para. 5). The First Student communications manager stated that they understand that the safety of students is their responsibility, and they will take measures to prevent similar situations in the future. However, what happened to Conner is not an isolated case, and most cases of attacks on people with special needs remain unreported.
Besecker’s Article
Besecker (2023) describes a recent manslaughter case that occurred in Erie County. Two years ago, Jamien L. Harris shot and killed her grandmother and was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a gun (Besecker, 2023). As a result of lengthy trials, the woman was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years in prison. According to the police report from the crime scene, Harris was “in a distressed state” (Besecker, 2023, para. 8). Because of this, the case gained significant resonance, as it raised the issue of firearm ownership and the need for more thorough background checks. This article allows you to better understand the justice system and its problems in the region.
Anderson’s Article
Anderson (2023) describes social media trends and their implications for small business development. For example, “when a smaller restaurant unexpectedly goes viral on TikTok or other
social media, the sudden demand can be overwhelming” (Anderson, 2023, para. 5). Although this helps to develop and promote local businesses, it can have negative consequences. Many entrepreneurs find themselves unprepared for the large influx of customers that exposes problems in management, resource management, and other critical aspects of their operations (Anderson, 2023). As a result, such popularity may not lead to the desired result but can become fatal.
