Bureaucracy is generally present everywhere in the everyday life of ordinary citizens. It forms a sphere of freedom and opportunities, but its influence can be both positive and negative, depending on the efficiency and transparency of its functioning (Felten & Oertzen, 2020). On the one hand, bureaucracy plays a significant role in my life because it maintains order and provides basic services.
As a result, state institutions function, public services are regulated, and there is order in politics and law. This makes my life much easier as a citizen who does not need chaos and inconsistency in the provision of basic services. In principle, this would lead to a decline in citizens’ overall quality of life. For example, bureaucratic structures oversee public safety measures, health care systems, and infrastructure development.
However, bureaucratic aspect can hinder progress and stifle innovation. Excessive red tape, complex procedures, and bureaucratic inertia can hinder the effectiveness of public institutions and inhibit citizen participation (Herzfeld, 2021). It also often exacerbates social inequality, as marginalized communities may face greater barriers to accessing public services and resources. All of this applies to me as an ordinary citizen, and observing the negative effects of bureaucracy significantly depresses trust.
One of the main problems of bureaucracy is its tendency towards inefficiency and lethargy. Complex procedures can lead to delays and administrative obstacles. This prevents timely decision-making and timely response to citizens’ needs. To remedy this, streamlining bureaucratic processes through digitization and automation can significantly increase efficiency and reduce bureaucratic burdens for citizens.
Implementation of convenient online platforms for accessing government services and information will increase transparency and accessibility. This will allow citizens to interact more effectively with the bureaucracy. Overall, while the bureaucracy performs important functions in society, it is important to address its shortcomings so that it remains an enabler rather than a hindrance to citizens’ freedom and well-being. By paying attention to efficiency, transparency, and citizen orientation, the bureaucracy can better perform its tasks and contribute to society’s overall development.
