Payroll Methods

The results of calculations of the median salaries of the six positions (retail establishment assistant manager, landscaper, police patrol officer, engineering manager, registered nurse, and mechanical engineer) show that personal calculations of medium salaries of the workers do not differ considerably from those reported by the US government. It means that the evaluation of different fields of work is rational, and human skills and knowledge are appreciated in the right way. Still, the salary of a mechanical engineer is characterized by the most evident difference because this profession may require different conditions as well as knowledge, and in comparison to other jobs, this job may contain a variety of duties depending on the working conditions.

Talking about the methods of payment, it is necessary to underline the fact that each job has its peculiarities considering the conditions under which a person has to work, a variety of duties which may be defined, and the sphere of work that has to be done. In this paper, six jobs are identified, and each of them has their methods of payment.

Registered nurses, for example, may specialize in several spheres of patient care at the same time (“Occupational Outlook Handbook”, 2010). This is why it is not always possible to define the salary exactly, and the following methods of payment may be appropriate for such a job: hourly salary or base plus a bonus for additional amounts of work.

Landscapers usually have stable working schedules and certain amounts of work. Still, sometimes, they have to complete more work regarding the orders, this is why it is possible to guess that the method of payment that is more preferable for this job is base plus bonuses which depend on the demand of work.

Engineer managers usually supervise other engineers who aim at developing new projects. Their duties vary considerably depending on the work done; however, as a rule, they have stable working schedules, and their salary may be an incentive that may promote more involvement in work or base plus bonuses regarding the work done.

Police patrol officers have certain territory to control, this is why their salary are usually base. Still, there are some cases when more work has to be done or unexpected situations that make officers take special actions. This is why another method of pay preferable for these people is the incentive to appreciate the help offered.

Assistant managers at retail establishments are usually supervised by other managers and do the work of any type. Still, their responsibility is not as high as those of their supervisors, this is why the base salary is paid to such assistant in case they perform their work regularly.

Finally, mechanical engineers usually perform duties in designing different tools, systems, and machines that are necessary for a particular sphere of life (“Occupational Employment Statistics”, 2009). It happens that some additional work is required, this is why it is possible to use the following methods of pay: hourly wages, base salary plus bonuses, or even incentive wage that will encourage engineers to work harder and more successfully.
