Program description

“Campbell Soup Company is a global manufacturer and marketer of high-quality foods and simple meals, including soup, baked snacks and healthy beverages.” (Camden para 1). This company was founded in 1869. The name of the program developed by this company is ‘Help Grow Your Soup’. The aim of this program is to provide support and help for all American farmers. “The program is intended to help people reconnect with the source of the food they eat everyday, including those ingredients that go into Campbell’s condensed soup.” (Katelin para 2). Program includes giving training for students to make them future leaders in agriculture industry. With the support of FFA (Future Farmers of America) this company has restored five barns across the country and planted many gardens in places like Detroit, Atlanta, New York etc. In joining hands with FFA, Campbell has spent a quarter of million dollars to support the future of American farming. The program also includes sharing of knowledge or providing education in promoting, developing and cultivating agricultural seeds. “The National FFA Organization is a part of an exciting plan working toward having 10,000 quality agricultural education programs by the year 2015.” (Sowing the Seeds of Education para 1). Program’s main motto is to encourage members who are participating in this program by putting positive attitude in them to do work. Program includes different types of projects started in different places for handling agricultural related things.

Three projects in the program

The three projects taken for comparison purpose are ‘Just Wait And See Farm, Union bridge, Maryland’, ‘Providence Grove High School Barn, Climax, North Carolina’ and ‘Rollinghills Farm, Staunton, Virgina’. Each of these are explained and are compared each other.

‘Just wait and see farm’ was built in 1856. It is a traditional barn with two levels – upper level and lower level. Hay and grains are kept on upper level and cows and horses are kept on lower level. The current owners bought this farm before one and half years ago and “changed it over to a beef and calf operation, using the land primarily for pasture, hay, and corn.” (The Just Wait and see Farm para 1). Restoration of this barn which is located in very traditional manner will bring more advantages. With this, a good community can be built up and supports from neighborhoods are also very important. By restoring this barn, one can preserve it for next generation. Another advantage of doing this project is it will give chance to family members to communicate with FFA members and also many other club members and other various community members. All of them together can work for a common cause.

‘Providence Grove High School Barn’ was built in 1946. It was built as cattle barn. Later, land was sold to school. Authorities of the school realized that there is some potential present in the land and it can be used for agricultural program. This project is very useful for the students to understand skills of agricultural activities. Also this is most beneficial for FFA as more people visit here to get knowledge on agricultural activities. This barn is very useful to those who need to study about origin of food. Name of this activity is “‘fun on the farm.’” (Providence Grow High School Barn para 2). Rollinghills farm was built in 1915. This barn helps to boost confidence in many people. The main aim of this project is to bring more young people towards agricultural work. Family people always show enthusiasm in doing work in barn. Everyday, members of the family also being FFA members always engage in planting crops, harvesting crops, doing maintenance for field equipment etc. The main aim of this project is to attract more young people towards agricultural work and to make them energetic future leaders.

Each of the projects explained above have got their own roles in attracting many people in agricultural activities. All these barns get helping hands from FFA. So, they can move forward without any fear. ‘Just wait and see farm’ is preserved for future use with an intention that many youths will take part in this program. Similarly, Providence Grove High School Barn also aims the youth. It is different from others as they keep open space for students to understand about various techniques of agricultural activities from its initial phase itself. Not only students, many others can also come to this place to analyze and get knowledge about how activities are taking place in farm. In case of Rollinghills farm it is slightly different from others as they are mainly looking to bring more and more youths towards agricultural activities. Many of the workers working here are FFA members also. So, their motivation is extraordinarily large towards youths.

The project of interest

I would be interested in supporting and participating in Providence Grove High School Barn project. The significance of this project is that one can come and watch the activities here. The people who are working or doing this project in barn give the facilities for this. This will give clear idea on understanding about the activities one should follow in barn. Name of the activity is fun on farm. The name itself provides some kind of interest to one to know about the activities in farm. So, this might be a very useful project and one can understand more about the activities going on in barn.
