The reasons for pursuing a career in nursing

Every person, who is intent on pursuing a career in nursing must be well of aware of those challenges which will arise in the course of his or her work almost on a daily basis. At first it is vital to outline the motives for entering this profession. I have several reasons for doing it; one of them is deep admiration for people who perform this hard job.

During my life I have met many nurses whose support and encouragement help people to live through the most difficult times. They prevent patients from surrendering to the disease or falling into despair and significantly alleviated their sufferings. Their role is so often underestimated but I am firmly convinced that recovery is utterly impossible without appropriate caring. Moreover, I have always enjoyed communicating with people who may belong to different social or cultural backgrounds and this is an indispensable quality for every highly qualified nurse who must be able to find an approach to various patients.

There is another reason why I have chosen this field of medicine, it is empathy for others. I do understand that this statement can be proven by actions rather than words. Every healthcare professional has such moments when it is rather difficult to maintain positive attitude towards one’s work. This is why I would not like to make any loud claims at least at this stage of my career.

The benefits of baccalaureate preparation

Although I have not achieved perfection in every aspect of my profession, the time that I have spent in college made me realize that the concept of nursing has immensely changed over the last century. Earlier it was believed that a nurse was just the person who closely followed physicians instructions and performed only menial tasks but now this worker bears heavy responsibility for decision-making and this raises academic standards for students (Iwasiw et al, 55).

Baccalaureate preparation is essential for successful career because it gives the knowledge and skills which are necessary for good performance. It includes training courses in psychology, diagnostics, epidemiology, and other branches of medical science. In my opinion, baccalaureate program is a minimum requirement of a future nurse. Unceasing learning is the groundwork of good health care; the well-being of patients strongly depends on the nurses competence and continuous education is a compulsory element of medical training.

The qualities of a good medical worker

Undoubtedly, this profession and this program are extremely demanding so every candidate must be well-prepared for them. There are some qualities and skills which are needful. It may be too ambitious of me to boast of my achievements or virtues. Nevertheless, I think that I have good presence of mind especially in the situations which require quick and strong-willed decisions. I am able to maintain calm under stressful circumstances. I am not prone to melancholy and spleen and in my presence people are normally more cheerful than they usually are.

Again, I would like to emphasize the idea that at this point the truthfulness of my words cannot be verified. As a student of baccalaureate program I will do my utmost to master the key components of nursing. Naturally, some people can say that a nurse must be kind and compassionate otherwise he or she will be a disaster for others. But it is too pompous for a college student to shower praises on oneself. As a matter of fact, it often reminds hollow promises which are given only to please others.

Nursing and global health care

From my standpoint, the true character of an individual is tested only through real practice, which brings out both strengths and weaknesses. The person whose example I would like to follow is Florence Nightingale who laid the foundations of nursing practice (Kim & Kollak, 2006). She was not a physician, nor did she possess any suitable qualifications, yet she dramatically changed global healthcare.

Florence Nightingale confirmed the principle of humanism and compassion as the cornerstone of medical service. Nowadays a great number of medical workers attempt to address diverse problems in different regions of the world. In this case, the role of nurses becomes crucial because they participate in volunteer programs in various countries, stop the spread of many contagious diseases, and provide guidelines for self-help (Dossey & Keegan, 42).

At the moment the situation in global health care still leaves much to be desired, as some people are forced to live virtually in unsanitary conditions, but this has nothing to do with nurses. They have to fight against insuperable odds such as bureaucracy, red tape, insufficient funding and so forth. Without them a part of the world population would have been on the brink of dying. But even despite this self-evident fact the society is not able to appreciate the true of value of their work.

Conclusion

Therefore, every individual, who intends to choose nursing career, must be ready for these difficulties otherwise he or she will have frustration after frustration which is impermissible. Excellent knowledge, patience, empathy, and cheerfulness are the attributes which help to overcome practically every obstacle on this path.
