Peter Paul Rubens’ Artworks

The painting Catherine la Rose by Peter Paul Rubens presents three naked women standing under a tree while deeply engrossed in conversation. In this painting, Rubens capitalizes on colour and balance to draw the attention of the viewer. He ensures that the elements in the background are symmetrically-balanced with those in the foreground to maximize the concentration of the viewer on the main subjects-the three women. As far as colour is concerned, Rubens uses bright colours in the foreground, darker ones in the middle-ground and lighter shades in the background. This mix of different colour shades gives the painting depth and also ensures that the attention of the viewer is primarily fixed on the main subjects. He also plays around with different shades of the same colour on the skins of the women, to create a realistic three-dimensional feel.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini’ Artworks

My favourite Baroque artiste is Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This is because besides basing his sculptures on controversial subjects, he ensured that the pieces stood out. One of the elements of composition that was consistent in Bernini’s works was balance. The artist ensured that the works he created were as realistic and proportional as possible. He also played around with various components of form and shape to ensure that each piece could stand on its own.
