Having analyzed the issue of diabetes and how it affects the U.S. population, it seems critical to implement Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) to improve the health situation. Not only does DSMES is a cost-effective tool, but it can also considerably improve health outcomes for those who already have the condition. I believe that it is critical for my peers to know how to manage their blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol on their own. This way, they will turn to medics in extreme situations and allow them to focus on treating people in harsh conditions with this diagnosis.
Furthermore, the advancement in technology made it easier for people to treat their diabetes. For instance, CGM can now be conducted with the help of a tiny sensor that is positioned on either an individual’s belly or arm (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 2022). It measures interstitial glucose level every few minutes and sends the data to a monitor that activates an insulin pump in the same sensor if needed. Yet this technology will not be easy to master for everyone, so nurses should provide their patients with instructions on how to use these devices or their alternatives. The example with a CGM sensor is meant to show that doctors should focus on educating people with diabetes on how to manage their condition and what to do in extreme situations.
Overall, I consider a face-to-face appointment to discuss everything with patients to be critical when preparing adolescents to manage their condition on their own using DSMES. Not only is it easier for my peers to perceive information this way, but nurses can also show them crucial skills of injecting insulin or taking blood pressure and glucose. Furthermore, doctors must be patient and understanding when educating their patients on their diagnosis to realize their condition’s seriousness.
