Gaining Attention—about 1 minute

Since this is a class of international students who may not be aware of copyright laws, or where to apply them, I will begin by explaining what copyright laws are and why one needs to know about them especially when living in America. This information is accessible from the website given above.

Direction— 5 minutes

(this will be an introduction of what we expect to accomplish in this lesson including the general objective of the lesson)

The main objective of this lesson is to learn about international copyright laws and this can be accomplished by studying the copyright laws applied in different countries since there is nothing like international copyright. An author’s work is protected by the national laws applied in specific countries although international copyright treaties offer some protection to foreign works.

Objectives

  • learn more about international conventions (Berne Convention and Universal Copyright Convention)
  • Identify the members of these conventions
  • Explain how the members of these conventions are protected against copyright theft
  • Highlight the requirements in these conventions- notice of copyright, year of publication, and name of the copyright proprietor.

Recall— 5 minutes

Review general information about Berne and Universal Copyright convention that makes up the international copyright laws.

Content— 10 minutes

A quick review of the website with information regarding international copyright laws

Application Feedback—Level 1— 0 minutes

Students who feel that they need to review the website again can view it over the internet on a computer in the Library or use the class computer after the lesson.

Students will form small groups and go through the website together then share what they have learned.

Application Feedback—Level 3— 5 minutes

Students will engage in a brainstorming session where they discuss the content of the lesson, the knowledge they have gained, and ask questions in areas that are not clear.

Evaluation— 5 minutes

I will use a cloze test to evaluate and multiple-choice questions to evaluate whether the students have fully understood the objectives of the lesson.

Closure— 5 minutes

A short discussion about what the international students discovered about international copyright law.

Lesson Plan 2

Gaining Attention— 0 minutes

Since this is a continuation of lesson plan 1, it does not require an introduction.

Direction— 5 minutes

Having discussed what is international copyright laws, I will move ahead to American copyright laws. The objectives of this lesson include:

  • explain what is protected under American copyright laws
  • explain where American copyright laws derive their power
  • the scope of the copyright law- exclusive rights to Authors and Inventors
  • Explain the type of work protected under this law- this includes literary, dramatic, architectural works, and musical
  • Explain what amounts to infringement of the copyright law.

Recall— 5 minutes

I will ask students to recall what they learned under international copyright law and what they think should be included in the American copyright law

Content— 10 minutes

Reviewing the website.

Walkthrough the website explaining each part and how it relates to copyright laws.

After each part, I will ask if students have any questions before moving on to the next.

When the walkthrough is complete I will ask students if they have any further questions about the topic.

Students can visit the website using computers in the library after the lesson

Students will form large groups and go through the website one more time

In small groups, students will discuss what they have learned, how the lesson has helped them, and how to apply the knowledge they have gained

Lesson Plan 3

Gaining Attention— 0 minutes

Explain what Japanese copyright laws are

Direction— 5 minutes

Objectives of this lesson are:

  • Understanding the constituent of Japanese copyright laws- Author’s Rights, and Neighboring Rights
  • understanding where these laws can be applied
  • Learning about the rights provided under these laws- moral rights, economic rights, neighboring rights, performer’s rights, among other rights
  • the exceptions to this law
  • what makes the Japanese copyright law different from the American law

Recall— 0 minutes

Content— 10 minutes

Walkthrough the website for information related to Japanese copyright laws

During the walkthrough allow students to ask questions

  • Application Feedback—Level 1— 0 minutes
  • Application Feedback—Level 2— 0 minutes
  • Application Feedback—Level 3— 2 minutes

Ask questions at random to individual students regarding the topic

Evaluation— 0 minutes

Allow students to participate in role-plays where they act in realistic situations which help them in recalling what they learn

Closure— 3 minutes

Students will be given a test to assess their understanding of the topic

Lesson Plan 4

Gaining Attention— 0 minutes

Direction— 2 minutes

Students will be asked to discuss what they expect to cover in Saudi copyright laws.

After the lesson, students should be able to identify the differences between the four types of copy rights already discussed in class.

  • Recall— 0 minutes
  • Content— 20 minutes
    • During this lesson, the students will be using the copyright website as a guide in gathering information and library resources.
    • The students will spend this lesson in the Library accessing information through the internet on Saudi copyright laws.
    • The students will also use other sources of information in library resources such as books, and periodicals to gather more information about the topic
    • The students can also utilize local library resources, outside of school time, to gather information.
  • Application Feedback—Level 1— 0 minutes
  • Application Feedback—Level 2— 5 minutes

Students can form small groups and research together while discussing the key points

While the students are in the Library accessing information, the teacher will walk around doing informal progress checks and assist the students in case they have questions.

Evaluation— 10 minutes

Students will write short notes about the information they have gathered and the teacher will go through these notes to assess whether the students have exhausted what was required in the topic.

Closure— 3 minutes

Students will then take their notes and format them accordingly for easy reading or put them in a brochure format.

Lesson Plan 5

Gaining Attention— 5 minutes

This is the last lesson and more often than not, many students might be tired or the topic might start to be boring. To ensure that the students concentrate on the very end, the teacher can start by cracking some jobs, for instance

The objective of this lesson is to:

  • Enhance the students’ research skills
  • Ensure that all students understand the international copyright laws and how they are applied in specific countries
  • Ensure that students understand what is contained in the Indian copyright law and what makes it different from the copyright laws in other countries

Recall— 3 minutes

Review how to use the website on copyright laws

Content— 20 minutes

Students will go through the website individually and make notes about Indian copyright laws. They can also use information from the library and other websites to gain a deeper understanding of the topic.

Students will share notes and discuss the topic in class.

Application Feedback—Level 3— 0 minutes

The teacher will walk around observing students answering questions and helping where needed.

Evaluation— 20 minutes

The teacher will give an exam at the end of the lesson covering all the areas covered in the international copyright laws. Students will be expected to answer all questions within the stipulated time. The teacher will then give a portfolio to each student showing the students’ achievements and progress.

Closure— 2 minutes

Every student will be asked to explain what they have learned about international copyright laws and why this knowledge will help them in the future. They will also give a link to the website that was created on copyright laws for a deeper understanding.
