The laws regarding copyrights were established centuries ago, allowing creators have full ownership of their intellectual property. The Constitution gives a clear-cut idea of copyrights and protects people from the theft that pertains to the given field. Nowadays, copyrights are especially popular due to the technological era that people live in. The 21st century and its innovations might have been both a blessing and a curse. Society constantly faces such challenges as cyberattacks that can lead to the stealing of private information and intellectual property. Thus, copyrights permeate the rights of almost every person that has access to the Internet.
Among the situations that involve copyrights are the streaming platform subscriptions. In this sense, there are a lot of platforms that offer music or movie subscriptions for fees. However, there are loopholes that let people to watch or listen to content illegally. Numerous websites steal content from artists, allowing others to use it for free. On the one hand, it might be considered a Robin Hood behavior, wherein individuals who cannot afford subscriptions are able to enjoy content for free. Nevertheless, it might be regarded as unfair toward the creators, their labor, time, and capital that were utilized to provide something meaningful for society. At this point, it is vital to recognize the influence of different kinds of content on the community. If every individual wishes to only use illegal websites to watch or listen to content stolen from artists, there will be no incentive for the latter to continue their work. As a person who recognizes the effort put into this type of work, I believe that the legal system must reinforce copyrights and protect creators from malicious intents of those who redistribute the content.
However, watching favorite movies or listening to the latest songs released by various musicians on illegal websites is not the only situation that involves copyrights. Some people might not even realize that their actions can affect copyright infringements. For example, I love recording videos to commemorate some events in my life with my friends or my family. Most of the time, I enjoy overlaying music in a video. Furthermore, in my college presentations, I put effort into making them visually appealing. As a result, I always insert pictures that suit the topic of the presentation. Yet, this is considered copyright infringement since I use the intellectual property of the creators without their consent. If I wanted to publish my videos on media platforms or sell my presentation, I could either experience the unpleasant moment of my video being banned or face a litigation process.
Hence, copyrights are an integral part of the legal system since they protect the rights of creators. In a world with such a quick pace and growth, the theft of intellectual property is not something shocking anymore. My daily routine and tasks allowed me to grasp copyrights’ scope and how they permeate people’s lives. On the one hand, copyright infringement can be an unintentional action when using any type of content, such as music, video, or a photo, for personal use. On the other hand, copyright infringement can be observed through the example of illegal websites that either sell or provide content stolen from artists for free. Still, considering modern technologies, it can be a severe challenge to prevent such unlawful activity from happening.
