It is imperative to mention that the influence of media has started to increase in the 60s and 70s. Many musicians have tried to discuss some of the biggest issues and tragedies. Motown record company was incredibly popular at that time, and many records that were produced at that time have had an enormous impact.

One of the works that need to be discussed is “What’s going on,” a song by Marvin Gaye, an American musician that was released in 1971 (Andersen, 2003). It is paramount to note that it is regarded as one of his best works, and many view it as a masterpiece. The fact that the artist wanted to change the direction of his music also should not be overlooked. Gaye understood that he has gained an enormous following, and he could draw attention to these problems (Brown & Lison, 2014). He wanted to deliver messages that were meaningful. Also, it is necessary to mention that his work was met with universal acclaim and was highly praised by critics and audiences. The artist was known for his innovative approach, and he was able to change the way soul music is perceived because this genre has not previously focused on politics and social issues.

The song was based on the experience of Gaye’s brother, who had to fight in Vietnam. He thought that some of the changes that happened over the years were not positive. Misunderstandings and hatred were quite problematic, and he was worried about the fact that individuals were not allowed to express their opinions. For instance, brutality from the side of police towards protests was worrying. Such themes as damage to the environment and civil rights were also raised, and many individuals have understood that these issues need to be addressed (Charnock, 2012). Another aspect that is worth noting is that the influence that he had on other artists was quite significant, and many individuals have realized that music can be viewed as a particular form of protest. This work has played a critical role in the culture because many individuals have understood that media can be used as a powerful tool that may lead to possible changes.

This recording can be viewed as a core part of the Cultural Revolution at that time, and other works did not have such an enormous impact. The interest of the audience for this type of music has been increasing, and many musicians have started to record the music that is socially conscious. Another aspect that is worth mentioning is that the founder of the company was not interested in politics, but an artist was able to convince Berry Gordy, Jr. that this kind of music needs to be recorded. Moreover, other artists were given much more creative freedom (Clague, 2010). The rebellious spirit of Marvin Gaye is respected even nowadays, and his music is referenced in all kinds of media. The fact that he receives awards for his craft even after his death indicates that the music that he has produced is timeless.

In conclusion, it is evident that the impact of Marvin Gaye’s music is quite significant. Also, it is important to understand that he was able to affect the culture as a whole and it shows that a particular form of media may have an enormous influence on the population. Overall, one could listen to one of his albums to get a better understanding of issues and problems at a particular period.
