Immigration to the United States
The recently elected president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, plans to establish new immigration policies that are meant for not only boosting wages and creating avenues for more job opportunities but also enhancing the security of Americans. The regulations will defend the economic well-being of the legitimate immigrants who have already settled in the US while restricting the admission of foreign workers illegally (Zandi, Lafakis, White, & Ozimek, 2016). President Donald J. Trump wants to ensure that immigrants are chosen based on value and self-sufficiency. He is planning to put in place stringent vetting procedures with a view of supporting values, institutions, and people of the US. To accomplish this objective, there is a plan to suspend the immigration of people from countries that are prone to terrorism. According to Zandi et al. (2016), the president of the United States advocates the extradition of unlawful immigrants. Demanding employment policies will be implemented to assist in tracking illegal citizens using automated verification. The e-verify system, which has been implemented in several states, allows an employer to access the national online database to identify whether an employee is a legal citizen or has an authentic work permit. This strategy will make it hard for undocumented immigrants to access employment opportunities in the US. As a result, voluntary deportation among unemployed immigrants is likely to rise.
Besides, the US president calls for the termination of sanctuary cities where local regulations control the revelation of immigration statuses to legal officers. To accomplish this plan, the president has vowed to cut off federal grants to any city that fails to abide by the national laws. Lastly, he strongly believes that the construction of a wall along the US-Mexican border will assuage the entry of undocumented immigrants into the United States (Hidalgo, 2017).
The implication of President Donald J. Trump’s Immigration Policy on Terrorism
The regulations mentioned above mark a regime shift in the US immigration policy. Although it is uncertain how the president will drive America’s economy, there are various implications of the new laws on the prevention of terrorism. For instance, immigrants from countries of particular concern such as Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Iran have been banned from entering the US regardless of the validity of their visas. This move is deemed to protect the country from terrorists who enter the US disguised as refugees or tourists (Hidalgo, 2017).
The reformed visa issuance process will play a pivotal role in the exposure of people linked to terrorism. Hidalgo (2017) reveals that numerous undocumented immigrants in the US have been convicted of crimes related to terrorism. Civil unrest, war, and strife in various countries have incredibly increased the number of terrorists entering the United States under the name of refugees. The vigilance anticipated in the new US administration, especially on the issuance of visas, will ensure that the country does not admit any person who has ties to terrorism. The vetting of immigrants using a national database will provide grounds for admitting only those people who fit in the values and dogmas of the country; hence, protecting Americans from foreign nationals having bad intentions.
However, there is a need to remain vigilant in the vetting procedures not to harm lawful residents in the country. For instance, the mass deportation of immigrants who have lived in the country for about ten years will do more harm than good to the Americans. Lastly, the foreseen discrimination against Muslim countries is likely to challenge them to engage in a war with the US in a bid to defend Islam against destruction.
