Although abortion has been believed by some to be an inhumane act, it is more inhumane to prevent women from accessing it safely and freely. This topic has always been hotly contested, and even nowadays public’s opinions can be significantly different regarding the subject. Certain people believe that it is murder or disapprove of it because of certain religious and moral beliefs. Other individuals perceive abortion as a rather reasonable and necessary procedure that should exist as a part of healthcare and be accessible to the women who refuse to give birth to a child due to the diverse circumstances. Therefore, this paper argues why women should have the right to do abortions and that it is a crucial part of healthcare.
The topic of abortion was selected given the recent context of political and legal developments. Reading the draft of Supreme Court’s potential overturn of Roe v. Wade has been deeply horrifying since it demonstrates how little regard the authorities have for female body autonomy (Liptak, 2022). Prior to conducting the research, it was already clear that the choice regarding abortion should be made only by women, and the ability to do this is generally the basics of human rights.
Besides the possibility of free choice, abortion can save a woman’s life and prevent fatal complications during labor. Female patients turn to this procedure because of health problems, rape, accidental pregnancy, sex without protection, and many other reasons (Facts are important: abortion is healthcare. (n.d.). Giving birth is extremely dangerous for some women, potentially leading to death, and abortion is one of the ways to take care of female physical and mental health. Moreover, abortions’ restriction will not prevent the patient from doing them but stimulate women to do the operations in unsafe conditions (Facts are important: abortion is healthcare. (n.d.). Unprofessional assistance can cause severe physiological and psychological damages, death, or even failed abortion.
Overall, to avoid unpleasant consequences for women’s health and protect them from the possible danger caused by the restriction or limitation of abortions, they should be recognized as a crucial part of healthcare. Female patients are the ones who get to decide what to do with their bodies and choose whether to have children or not. Safe medical assistance and accessibility to abortions will reduce the number of traumas, deaths, and physical damages among women, which should be the primary goal of the healthcare system.
