It is possible to write a Master’s thesis about an environmental economics topic. The current geopolitical crisis has resulted in energy prices hitting record growth rates in Europe and the United States. As Guénette and Khadan (2022, para. 3) state, “the World Banks’s energy price index increased by 26.3 per cent between January and April 2022.” This increase was dramatic, and it did not end in April. Oil, coal, and gas prices keep rising today, and this issue inevitably results in higher utility bills for the population. Simultaneously, gasoline costs keep increasing, and it becomes more expensive for people to fill the tanks of their vehicles. This information suggests that many people can decide to use energy sparingly and drive their vehicles less frequently to save money, and this state of affairs will be advantageous for the environment.
Thus, the Master’s thesis can investigate the presented situation through the lens of environmental economics. Firstly, it will be necessary to find official information regarding the rise of energy prices in a particular country or world region in 2022 and compare costs to 2021. Secondly, it will be helpful to locate official organizations’ reports regarding the level of environmental pollution in the selected geographical area for 2021 and 2022. It is expected that 2022 has see decreased levels of pollutants in the atmosphere in those countries that have witnessed the most dramatic increases in energy prices. That is why the Master’s thesis is recommended to focus on a European country because the European Union has seen higher prices. If the hypothesis is proved, it will be possible to claim that increasing energy prices can be an effective strategy to fight against environmental pollution.
