The Early Childhood Education Centre in New Zealand states that they provide “a structured environment rather than structured activities.” The relevant approach seems to be most reasonable as it implies a number of basic principles that constitute conditions favorable for children’s healthy development. The primary benefit of such an environment is that it does not restrict a number of activities available for children’s learning.
The representative of the center points out that their main concern is that the children are “happy and safe” (bazzacaitcheon, 2006). The relevant condition is guaranteed by the fundamental principles of this center. One might chiefly notice a close connection with older generations – both parents and grandparents are encouraged to take part in the common activity. Then, it is important to mention the presence of the multi-cultural environment within which cultural traditions are treated with due respect – children receive an opportunity to try different national dishes. Finally, it is a safe and friendly atmosphere that allows children to develop naturally without experiencing any pressure or tension.
The environment illustrated in the video represents a fine example of an appropriate learning atmosphere. One might assume that an environment that will encourage children to develop safely should provide three significant conditions. First of all, it should be safe and tense-free. Furthermore, the place should be equipped with all the facilities necessary for providing various playing options. Lastly, it should have enough open space as exploring is an important aspect of a child’s development.
