The selected news article, “After a huge year for growth, the U.S. economy is about to slam into a wall,” was written by Jeff Cox and posted on the CNBC website earlier this year. As the title suggests, the article discusses that, in 2021, the American economy improved significantly; however, it seems that the same pattern of growth should not be expected in 2022 (Cox, 2022). This article presents a relatively objective view of the economic situation in the country without being overly political, not comparing the difference between the two parties and applying the philosophical teachings of Plato and Aristotle.
The lack of politicization of the issue of economic growth and downfall in this article makes it philosophical in nature. It appears that for the author, inspired by the ideas in Plato’s Republic, the existence of justice seems to be the priority rather than the comparison of strategies of the two parties (Strauss & Cropsey, 1987). Notably, Cox (2022) does not even raise the issue of the economic situation during Trump versus Biden era. This particular approach to discussion shows that the author seems to believe in the overall role of the government in providing virtuous life for its citizens. The latter was the core idea of Aristotle’s political philosophy (Strauss & Cropsey, 1987). It is evident that the author views the federal government as a whole by using the term “Feds,” not stating specific names or titles. By doing so, he presented an objective overview of the American economy today.
In summary, Cox’s article indirectly utilizes Aristotle and Plato’s philosophical principles to evaluate changes that occurred in the United States regarding economic development. By removing political polarization, the author could provide a relatively unbiased overview of improvements and failures in the American stock market. Indeed, it can be deduced from the article that Cox has a similar view of the government to Aristotle, believing that its only purpose should be to provide possibilities for virtuous life for the citizens.
