Life is a blessing, but only when pleasure prevails over suffering; life can be considered a blessing only when a person lives meaningfully. Accordingly, if a person’s physical suffering is so great that it covers all the joys of life, and they can unequivocally express their desire to end their life, there are grounds to ethically justify euthanasia. A person has the right to self-determination to the point that they can choose whether to live or die. If the disease has reduced a person to a vegetative state and deprived them of consciousness, then their life is no longer fully human and therefore is not considered a blessing. A person has the right to be altruistic, in other words, they can feel sorry for their loved ones and stop burdening them either morally or financially. In addition, there is an economic side to the problem: the treatment and maintenance of seriously ill patients take a lot of money from society.
A life of suffering is still a blessing if the alternative is the absence of life. Experiencing pain, a person can experience feelings; experiencing negative emotions, they still experience. After death, there is no possibility to feel anything, so a life of torment is a greater blessing than death. Allowing euthanasia only based on the dying person’s will is equating euthanasia with suicide. Moreover, a doctor performing this procedure undermines their authority in front of society. People may develop a distrust of doctors since they should treat patients and not kill them. From a religious point of view, euthanasia is a sin, since a person has no right to take another person’s life.
