Family communication is the interaction between family members in everyday life. There is a mutual influence of family members on each other in the process of communication.
- The family is a system whose components are interconnected and interdependent. Changes in one part of the system completely modify its essence.
- A person begins to learn communication and social interaction in the process of family communication. Skills gained in childhood can determine the course of a subsequent life, on this, family communication is so crucial (Theiss, 2018).
The lack of effective communication in family relations negatively affects all family members; there is a risk of mental disorders, problems in socialization, and other issues.
- There are many forms of ineffective communication frequent in various families: threats, disrespect, condemnation, notation, disregard, violation of personal boundaries, and much more.
- Family psychotherapy can become a useful tool in establishing family communication and acquiring effective interaction skills.
For family communication to remain effective and contribute to the development of each family member’s personality, work, and input are required from each of them.
- A number of methods contribute to improving family communication. They include creating family traditions, discussing the rules and roles of family members, mutual respect, and others (Miller-Day, 2017).
- Children inherit the example of their parents in the behavior pattern (Bernhold, 2020). For this reason, parents should not exert pressure in their education but show an example of what they want to see.
