• Note: Currently, nurses interact with patients of various nationalities. Family nurse practitioner has to communicate with patients belonging to different cultures, ethnicities and religions. The problem of intercultural communication between a nurse and a patient is very relevant; the use of transcultural nursing helps to solve it.

Theoretical Model

• Aim: overcoming barriers during the interethnic communication between nurse & patient.
• Barriers: linguistic & cultural.
• Model of transcultural nursing: peculiarities of national character, national specific features of thinking & mentality.
• Note: The theoretical model of transcultural nursing is aimed at overcoming various barriers that arise during the interethnic communication between a nurse and a patient. One of the important barriers that people of different nationalities have to overcome when communicating is the linguistic or language barrier. In addition, it is necessary to overcome the cultural barrier, because another language reflects another world and another culture (Caglar and Bilgili, 2020). The model of transcultural nursing allows taking into account the peculiarities of national character, and national specific features of thinking and mentality.

Relevance for Family Nurse Practitioner

• Mutual understanding: no hostility towards other races, nationalities & religions.
• Important in forming of health habits of the family.
• Transcultural nursing: finding approach to patient & relatives.
• Note: A family nurse practitioner who cannot overcome feelings of hostility towards other races, nationalities and religions will not be able to reach mutual understanding with patients. Race, nationality and religion play an important role in the forming of health habits of the family, so knowledge of transcultural nursing will allow to most effectively find an approach not only to the patient, but also to their relatives.

• Asia, the Middle East, Latin America: final decision made by patient’s husband.
• Note: An issue related to the family nurse practitioner specialty is that traditionally in the countries of Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, the final decision is made not by the patient herself, but by her husband (Tosun and Sinan, 2020).

Impact on Health Outcomes

• Not receiving all necessary information about patient.
• Incomplete medical history – negative health outcomes.
• Note: A nurse may not receive all the information from a patient with whom it is necessary to communicate through an intermediary – a husband or an older family member. Incomplete medical history collection will negatively affect health outcomes.

Framework to Guide Evidence-Based Practice

• Transcultural nursing: proper interaction with patient & family.
• Demonstrating emphatically polite & respectful attitude.
• Gaining trust & opportunity to talk to the patient directly.
• Note: Using transcultural nursing will allow the nurse to properly interact with the patient and her family. Demonstrating an emphatically polite, respectful attitude to such an intermediary, the nurse will gain their trust and the opportunity to talk to the patient directly.

Unique Insight & Perspective

• Efectively treating women patriarchal cultures.
• Taking into account peculiarities of national & cultural psychology.
• Note: The unique insight or perspective offered through the application of the transcultural nursing model makes it possible to effectively treat women in families of patriarchal cultures. If a nurse violates these rituals, then their behavior is perceived as impolite, and their services are likely to be refused (Larsen et al., 2020). Therefore, transcultural nursing gives a nurse a unique opportunity to effectively take into account the peculiarities of national-cultural psychology.

Conclusion

• Use of transcultural nursing model in family nursing: beneficial for patient.
• Note: Family nurse practitioners should use the transcultural nursing model in their practice, as this allows them to ensure that the treatment corresponds to the cultural characteristics of the patient.
