The Feminist Theorists

The feminist theory and movement were first developed and promoted in the 20th century. One of the earliest contributors to feminist theory is Mary Wollstonecraft. She highlighted the inequalities between the sexes and advocated for women’s rights in her works. A special contribution was made to the women’s suffrage movement by Susan B. Anthony, which led to the foundation of the National Woman Suffrage Association. As part of the women’s suffrage movement, Victoria Woodhull is considered the first female candidate for president of the United States. Alice Walker advocated for the rights of women of color at the end of the 20th century, creating a feminist branch named womanism.

The Feminist Theory Definition and Principals

The feminist theory is one of the most known and popular theories of the contemporary world. The theory focuses on dismantling harmful social beliefs that undermine equality and harm women (Longino, 2017). Feminism prioritizes women’s interests, addressing their unique problems and challenges. By using the intersectionality approach, modern feminism promotes equality and inclusion of women in contemporary society (Lombardo & Kantola, 2019). The main principles of feminism are supporting transformative change, recognizing power and privilege, honoring context, complexity, and diversity.

The Definitions of Key Terms and Concepts

There are many terms and concepts that are used to address and describe feminist theory. One of the main terms is patriarchy, which is a hierarchically structured model of society where power is held by men. Sexism refers to the idea of women being inferior to men; misogyny means hatred of women. Internalized sexism is a term describing women’s inferiority belief as a part of one’s own worldview and self-concept.

The Challenges and Strengths of the Theory’s Application

There are many strengths of the feminist theory application; however, it faces some problematic challenges. The methods based on the feminist paradigm of helping people are more effective due to the increased awareness regarding the power balance in relationships and society in general. Additionally, the theory’s application successfully promotes the empowerment and motivation of female victims. Despite that, contemporary feminism often faces criticism from both men and women that support the patriarchal model of society. Empowered women who do not fit a patriarchal society’s submissive and passive role are often viewed as selfish and unappealing.

The Theory’s Usefulness for Social Workers

The feminist theory has numerous practical implications for social work practitioners dealing with domestic violence and other problems faced by women. By emphasizing the difference between the experiences of powerful and less powerful members of society, the best solutions can be further explored, improving victims’ lives. The feminist theory also provides a better understanding of the context, circumstances, and perspectives of female victims, which facilitates the establishment of a strong empathetic connection. The approach of addressing domestic violence as a part of the inequality problem facilitates effective dialogue between social workers and their clients.

The Description of Proposed Intervention

With the implementation of the Feminist theory, the intervention would improve the efficiency and the outcomes of social work and victim support. This could be achieved by acknowledging and accommodating the specific needs of domestic violence victims. The clients in need should be provided with help regarding the change of their thinking and behavior patterns. Establishing an open dialogue to develop self-efficacy is crucial for helping women face various problems in modern society.
