Introduction

In December 2019, almost all populations faced the challenge of a new coronavirus infection known as COVID-19. Healthcare providers and governments had to manage their spread and severity, leading to multiple complications and deaths (Filip et al., 2022). It was necessary to analyze a situation and offer public health policies to deliver credible health information, underline communication challenges, and enhance financial stability.

Global Health Comparison

Table 1 – Comparison of Response to the Global Issue in the US vs. Canada

CountryUnited StatesCanada
PoliciesThe U.S. government enacted a social distancing policy to mitigate the spread of the virus by encouraging people to stay home, work remotely, and avoid public gatherings (Cantor et al., 2022).The Canadian government enhanced leadership and coordination through a series of measures and recommendations, including promoting proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette (Urrutia et al., 2021).
StrengthsInfectivity reduction, disease control, and more time to examine the situation.Reduced coronavirus risks, respiratory disease prediction, and improved health outcomes.
WeaknessesUnpredictable social rejection, learning and working challenges, isolation-related concerns, and mental health changes.Unequal access to water, poor education about hygiene, and quality concerns about water resource safety.
Impact of social determinants of health
  • Housing is not always safe.
  • Limited access to nutritious food affects the quality of health and overall well-being.
  • A lack of physical activity and movement during the pandemic contributes to obesity and weight problems.
  • Race/ethnic differences in Canada lead to health disparities.
  • Unsafe housing and environment challenge the population.
Addressed cost, quality, and access
  • Social distancing reduced the number of infected patients, resulting in lower healthcare costs.
  • Care quality was improved by predicting the spread of infections.
  • People reduce access to infectious sources.
  • Increased costs of water supply for the population.
  • The inability to improve water quality.
  • Some regions had scarce access to water.
Impact of the policy on the health of the global populationPeople faced new mental and emotional challenges while spending time in social isolation and distancing. The population defined handwashing as worth predicting to prevent most infections and improve their quality of life.
Potential impact of the health policy on the role of nursesEffective decision-making and problem-solving skills are crucial for nurses during periods of global crisis.Nurses should follow specific guidelines to ensure patient safety, healthy environments, and infection control.
Impact of global health issues on local healthcare organizations and policiesThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regularly gathers statistical reports. All healthcare facilities recognized the recommendations offered by the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization introduced new obligations related to hand hygiene in hospitals, along with penalties for non-compliance.
General Notes and CommentsSocial distancing has its pros and cons, but its impact on predicting a dangerous infection was evident.Hand hygiene is a crucial aspect of people’s health, and its worth should be recognized not only during the pandemic.

A Plan for Social Change

Implementing social change in the population requires time and research to prove its appropriateness and correctness. The COVID-19 pandemic is a serious public health concern that requires prompt attention to protect vulnerable groups (Filip et al., 2022). During the crisis, the U.S. and Canadian governments took multiple steps to deliver credible information, educate people, and offer the best and safest treatment and recovery conditions. Social distancing and hand hygiene are key policies to prevent the spread of infection and reduce health complications caused by COVID-19. Nurse leaders should incorporate this global perspective into their local practice to ensure patient safety and a healthy working environment.

To advocate for the incorporation of these policies, it is necessary to address the statistics and changes observed after the implementation of social distancing and hand hygiene. For example, in Canada, the progress of hospitalizations and deaths due to infections slowed down at both national and provincial levels (Urrutia et al., 2021). The United States used social distancing to reduce healthcare utilization and manage human behaviors (Cantor et al., 2022). These arguments prove the effectiveness of national policies during the pandemic crisis.

Conclusion

As a nurse leader, I am interested in improving my practice with the help of the offered policies. I will follow these recommendations for educational and organizational purposes. I expect these steps to positively impact my nursing career and a local practice, as following these simple rules does not require significant financial funding, just increased personal responsibility and attention. All nurses will complete their tasks, recognizing the value of a global perspective in their work. As soon as safe practices are followed in hospitals, patients and their families will be well-educated and informed about social distancing and hygiene, promoting similar social change in communities.
