The article in question dwells upon globalization and its impact on the further development of capitalism. The author focuses on the evolution of companies from developed countries and emerging markets, the so-called BRIC countries (Bishop 1). The central example of a company that has gone global is Lenovo, a Chinese producer of consumer electronics, which has recently become one of top companies according to Fortune.
The author provides quite an explicit thesis at the beginning of the article. The author states that globalization “is entering a new phase, with emerging-market companies now competing furiously against rich-country ones” and he also “asks what that will mean for capitalism” (Bishop 1). It is necessary to note that the thesis is precise and clear. It is also a hook as the reader is likely to be eager to find out how globalization affects capitalism.
As has been mentioned above, the author focuses on Lenovo, which is one of the most successful companies that have originated from an emerging market. The author concentrates on market trends and conventions, such as competition, managerial experience, HR management. The author also mentions such political issues associated with globalization as protectionism, outsourcing, state led economy and so on. The researcher uses comprehensive details and sound arguments.
To support his ideas, the author utilizes quantitative data provided in such reputable sources as Fortune and the book concerning capitalism in the new era. It is necessary to note that the author provides enough data to support his arguments. It is noteworthy that the data are presented in graphs with the necessary explanations.
This makes the article quite concise and easy to follow. Moreover, the outline of the text is easy to follow, as there are headings that help the reader focus on major points. Finally, the author uses simple words with the sufficient number of terms that are universally used and are understood by a wide audience.
Importantly, the author provides the answer to the question he raises at the beginning of the article. Thus, it is clear that globalization is associated with certain benefit and hazards. The benefits are illustrated with the help of the development of Lenovo.
However, globalization poses significant threats to further development of capitalism as companies from emerging markets are often state led (and oligarchic) (Bishop 3). This creates unfair competition, which, in its turn, may lead to the decrease in development of innovations that are crucial for the contemporary global market.
The work makes a timely and relevant contribution as it unveils threats of the future market. In fact, the article predicts negative effects that has become apparent recently, when the company Gazprom, which is state led and oligarchic, forces European countries to make political decisions necessary for Russia. Of course, there can be no fair competition if a company has such power and unlimited support of the state.
I totally agree with conclusions provided in the article. I also think that bad capitalism can spread (and it is now spreading) worldwide and prevent the global market from proper development. I believe the work is quite timely and those involved in business and politics should read it to understand the processes that are now taking place in the world. The article is quite eye-opening and it can help managers and the rest of the society adjust to the new environment and new challenges.
A Critical Review of the Documentary on Globalization during the 1990s
The documentary in question deals with peculiarities of globalization in the 1990s. The purpose of the documentary is to explore the essence of globalization through looking into the period of its development during the 1990s (which is regarded as the dawn of the present globalized world).
The explicit thesis (or subject matter) of the documentary is provided at the beginning of the movie. The purpose of the film in question is to see advantages as well as downsides of globalization (“Commanding Heights P3 New Rules of the Game”).
It is necessary to note that the documentary focuses on developed and emerging markets as well as political influence on the global economy. Thus, according to the film, the decision of the American government to move to free markets was crucial for globalization (“Commanding Heights P3 New Rules of the Game”). The documentary also includes data on the financial crisis that took place in the late 1990s and affected all countries.
One of peculiarities of the film is that it incorporates interviews with people who have quite a lot of information on the matter. Thus, President Clinton as well as numerous business people and analysts provide their extensive analysis of the issue. They also took an active part in numerous processes that resulted in the development of globalization.
There are also accounts of many other people who were affected by the changes that were taking place. Numerous data, names and dates are provided in the film, which makes it a reputable and valuable source for those interested in the issue.
It is necessary to note that the material provided in the film supports the filmmakers’ major arguments. Importantly, the film is perfectly outlined. The captions provide additional information and it is always clear what it is all about. The film provides an account of the development of global economy from the early 1990s up to 2001. It is easy to trace major shifts and milestones in the process. It is also noteworthy that the filmmakers give insights into development of particular countries as well as the global market. The documentary is very comprehensive and easy to follow.
The documentary fully answers the questions it poses at the beginning. Numerous details are provided and the viewer understands benefits and hazards of the globalization. The documentary has made a relevant and timely contribution as it looks into the dawn of globalization and reveals some peculiarities of this process. Importantly, a lot of attention is paid to the crisis of 1998 and this is a valuable insight as it can help prevent or, at least, respond to the challenges of new financial crises to come.
I have quite mixed feelings as to the documentary’s conclusions and recommendations. On the one hand, the documentary reveals major peculiarities of the globalization and the way different countries responded to it. This part of the film is very precise and cannot be refuted. At the same time, I have doubts that the argument concerning the role of the US policies in the process is valid. According to the film, the decision of the US government concerning the free market was the decisive and most important cause of the globalization.
I feel the role of the USA could be quite overestimated though the decision did play an important role in the process. However, it was only one factor among many others. At the same time, in my opinion, the film is a valuable piece as it helps understand the way globalization evolved in the 1990s. It also provides insights into the nature of financial crises that should be taken into account by managers and politicians.
