Introduction

Nowadays, the healthcare industry is shifting toward greater advancements that can optimize processes, enhance patient care, and improve health outcomes. For this reason, several trends have been identified and researched. Among these trends are technological advancements and patient-centered design. Both trends emphasize the need for efficient, cost-effective care that prioritizes patient quality of care.

Technological Advancements

The first trend widely discussed in the medical field is tied to technological advancements. New technological advances in computers in the 1960s and 1970s paved the way for the creation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) (Paul et al., 2022). The use of EHRs has not only made patient medical data easier to interpret and accessible from nearly anywhere worldwide, but has also altered the structure of health records, thereby changing health care (Paul et al., 2022). In the late 1980s and early 1990s, technology became more affordable, effective, and widespread, enabling faster, easier access to medical information through personal computers, local area networks, and the Internet (Paul et al., 2022).

Modern facilities use cutting-edge technology, such as automated machinery, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and modern medical equipment (Pradhan et al., 2021). This has enhanced patient safety, lowered healthcare costs, made healthcare services more accessible, and raised productivity in the medical sector (Pradhan et al., 2021). Thus, the growth of technology in facility design may be linked to significant advances in processing power, device shrinkage, and the growing availability of low-cost solutions.

Looking ahead, one may anticipate further integration of technology, such as artificial intelligence, into facility design. Artificial intelligence may play an essential role in future healthcare solutions. Machine learning is a key driver of precision medicine, a universally acknowledged advancement in treatment (Bohr & Memarzadeh, 2020). Given the fast advancements in AI for imaging analysis, it appears that most radiology and pathology images will be reviewed at some point by a computer (Bohr & Memarzadeh, 2020).

Speech and text recognition technologies are being used for patient communication and clinical note recording, and their use is expected to grow (Bohr & Memarzadeh, 2020). Speaking from personal experience, I can say I witnessed the significant role of technological advancements in facility design. As my grandfather was undergoing a complicated surgical procedure, advanced robotic surgical systems were involved. Consequently, the surgery was not only successful, but it ensured a quicker recovery for my grandfather.

Patient-Centered Design

Another notable historical trend in facility design is the transition to patient-centered design. In the 20th century, healthcare facilities were frequently constructed with an emphasis on medical personnel and functionality rather than patient comfort and well-being (ten Have & Neves, 2021). Patient rooms were frequently utilitarian, with little privacy and customization (ten Have & Neves, 2021). In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift toward a design that prioritizes the quality of care.

Organizations are increasingly focusing on creating a healing environment that enhances patient comfort, reduces stress, and supports positive health outcomes (Tian, 2023). Creating an inviting hospital environment is essential for improving patient well-being and encouraging healing (Tian, 2023). It is critical to health, as it significantly impacts patients’ well-being and perceptions of the entire process, resulting in faster recovery and better outcomes. Thus, the transition to patient-centered design might be ascribed to changing healthcare ideologies that value holistic treatment and patient pleasure.

In the years ahead, health transformation is likely to center on the patient, who will assume the role of health service consumer as they demand control over their medical care. The healthcare business will be transformed by the needs and demands of this new consumer of health services, who will demand updated experiences characterized by personalization, comfort, pace, and responsiveness in service delivery (Stoumpos et al., 2023). New digital technologies will accelerate the digitization of healthcare, benefiting both patients and the infrastructure (Stoumpos et al., 2023).

Some of the benefits include increased staff productivity, improved efficiency and effectiveness of health unit operations, and lower operating expenses (Stoumpos et al., 2023). In my experience, I saw the importance of a patient-centered approach as I visited a new outpatient clinic. By observing the environment, I noticed how calming the art on the walls was and how the light and reduced wait lines made me feel more relaxed.

Finally, ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) are undergoing several contemporary facility design changes. For example, the first design change is connected to a minimally invasive framework. ASCs prioritize designs that enable minimally invasive operations, such as incorporating new surgical technologies, improving workflow to shorten surgery times, and developing efficient patient flow systems (Schouten et al., 2023).

Operating room (OR) efficiency is defined as optimizing throughput and utilization while reducing overtime and wait times without requiring new resources (Schouten et al., 2023). The second change is related to enhanced patient experience. Centers are working to create a patient-friendly environment that includes comfortable waiting rooms, private recovery spaces, and expanded services for patients and their families (Davis et al., 2019). As the trend toward outpatient surgery shifts, ASC directors committed to providing high-quality care must prioritize quality and infection control.

Conclusion

In summary, trends in patient-centered design and technological advancements highlight the need to provide efficient, cost-effective treatment while prioritizing quality. The expansion of technology in facility design may be associated with considerable increases in computing power, device downsizing, and the growing availability of low-cost solutions. The shift to patient-centered design might be attributed to shifting healthcare beliefs that prioritize holistic therapy and patient satisfaction.
