There is a large variety of diseases that people can suffer from. Some ailments are able to be eliminated with modern science and medicine, while others continue to present a challenge to both society and the medical community. Among these, herpes can be noted as one of the more prevalent diseases while also currently not having any cures. In essence, herpes is an infection caused by a group of viruses called HSV. The different forms of the disease can be roughly classified as HSV-1 and HSV-2, representing oral herpes and genital herpes, respectively (Herpes). While a symptomatic distinction can be made, both types of the virus can manifest orally or on genitals. The primary method of spreading the disease is through skin contact during social interaction or sexual intercourse. In some people, herpes can be pronounced, while in others, it presents as hidden. Typically, herpes most acutely manifests in seasonal outbreaks, especially during winter and autumn (Herpes). While no current cure for herpes exists, various types of therapy are available to mitigate the symptoms of the disease and make it less painful for an individual. To reduce one’s chances of being infected or generally decrease the severity of herpes flare-ups, a number of steps can be taken, especially in sexual intercourse. Using protection, such as condoms or specific medication, can prevent herpes infection (Herpes). Overall, the condition does not present its carrier with a significant threat to their health, and its symptoms can be managed with commonly available medication. While the continued existence of herpes is unfortunate, it should be classified as a relatively mild incurable disease. Many people today have learned to live with it and lead full, fulfilling lives.
