Data management can be described as a process of acquiring, transferring, administrating, and preserving the data created by an organization. Effective data management is vital for any organization’s survival and growth as information is the primary resource any organization relies upon – no decisions can be made, and no product or service can be produced without relevant data. The bigger the organization gets, the more dependent on effective data management it becomes as manual control grows obsolete. The primary technology to administer and manage data is a database management system (DBMS) – software that plays the role of an interface between the data administrator and the database.

Various DBMS solutions are available; those include relational database management systems, NoSQL, in-memory, hierarchical, and other databases. NoSQL databases are more flexible in their data management capabilities, and they can be used for big data management (Stedman, 2019, para. 13). Such solutions as NoSQL databases already have most of the tools necessary for proper data management, including data governance and integration; thus, the business can outsource these processes to data management structures. However, it is also possible for organizations to keep all of the data management processes in-house, which will require the work of an internal IT team specialized in data management. This may reduce the risks associated with corporate data security, data misuse, and other possible problems.

Regarding the organizational aspect of data management, companies, which prefer to keep all of the data management processes in-house, need dedicated database administrators and developers, data architects and engineers, and data governance managers. The tasks, skills, and roles needed may vary depending on the nature of the business, the corporation’s size, and decisions regarding data management (Stedman, 2019 para. 32). If the data management is performed appropriately, the businesses will not have issues extracting and presenting data. Numerous software solutions help companies structure, visualize, and present their data in the best possible ways, such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and others.
