Immigration has proven to be a controversial topic for scholars from various countries. Uncontrolled migration might cause several issues, such as the local communities’ negative attitudes towards the people immigrating (Laskowski, 2021). Even though there is no universal view on this subject, it is still substantial to uphold the general openness of the borders in different countries, allowing individuals to reside in the place of their choice.
Providing an option for different people to travel freely between different countries is essential for several reasons. Miller (2016) argues that the open borders policy is critical for developing the countries’ economic efficiency, such as the labor market. Moreover, each individual should be provided with equal opportunity, meaning that there should be no distinction between the inhabitants of different countries (Miller, 2016). Overall, the human right to change the place of residence should be upheld by the nations of the world.
The issues concerned with illegal residency can be quite challenging to resolve. In my opinion, the people who immigrated illegally should be questioned on the motivation of their residence. It is crucial to reimagine the process of granting asylum to those seeking it and make the procedure more fast and clear (Selee et al., 2019). Some illegal immigrants might qualify for asylum permits, while others might be given other opportunities to remain in the country (Selee et al., 2019). A faster procedure or its decreased complexity might allow people to reconsider illegal residency.
I believe that the future of immigration depends on the local governments’ revision of their border policies. The epidemic of COVID-19 has halted the development of a free movement policy, making the implementation of an open border system incredibly challenging. In my opinion, the epidemic’s decrease might allow for further progress in this direction, creating a world where any person can reside in the place of their choosing.
To conclude, the issues related to immigration should be of more significant concern to the world’s countries. Discouraging illegal residency and creating an open border policy can be essential to uphold equal opportunity standards and fundamental human rights. The future of immigration might change significantly if the local governments reconsider their views towards immigrants. Resolving the COVID-19 crisis is essential for the solution of this problem.
